Hey all,

Happy to post my first deck! A while ago I asked for advice on the Facebook group for building a hobbit deck and someone suggested mixing hobbits and ents. I liked the concept so here it is... Well not as many ents as the first version now; this deck has been changed several times throughout the course of the campaign.

Since its first version (much heavier on ents), I improved some weaknesses and other problems, such as one hero having too many resources (unable to use them), or having too many resources and too few cards.

This deck is designed for solo play.

Opening hand

First priority is Steward of Gondor (which should always go on Pippin) for generating resources. Failing that, Frodo's Intuition or Peace, and Thought are the second priority, to attempt to draw the Steward.

Tactic

Most cards are either Lore or Neutral, so Steward of Gondor should always go on Pippin (also, make sure he survives the game).

Save 2 heroes for playing Peace, and Thought if you're in dire need of drawing more cards.

Ents should generally be played as early as possible because of their "enter exhausted" mechanic. The most useful allies in the deck are the Derndingle Warrior for defending, and Wellinghall Preserver for healing+questing; try to put them into play as early as possible.

Merry + Quickbeam or Skinbark are the main damage dealers. Attach 2 Dagger of Westernesse on Merry, and usually all Fast Hitch on him as well. That way you can damage several enemies per round for 10-12 damage (remember to use Merry's response on your ent buddy multiple times, combined with Fast Hitch!) depending on their engagement cost.

Sam Gamgee may sometimes need to defend an attack. It's safer to do so when Bill the Pony is in play. Hobbit Cloak is usually attached to Sam. Remember to ready him and give his bonus stats when you engage an enemy (and draw a card from Pippin's response).

Gandalf is very situational. I've used all 3 bonuses from him throughout the campaign. Keep in mind though, he's the only card able to reduce your threat.

Ent Draught I usually play on Derndingle Warrior, just in case they'd defend and a shadow card would increase damage dealt and kill them otherwise. Or on Sam if you have no Derndingles.

Errand-rider is useful as a backup defender in case of trouble, and also for moving resources around when needed (although I only needed this on the last quest, to get resources off Frodo since he goes away on a later stage). This is one card I'd swap, if you have a better idea.

Lastly, the neutral allies are there just for stats really (with Steward of Gondor you should have no problem putting 4-cost allies into play). Sometimes I activate Steward of Orthanc's response too. I believe this is the main change from initial versions of the deck, as some heroes (usually Sam and Frodo) didn't have many cards to spend their resources.

Weaknesses

I think the main weakness of this deck is that it has no use for duplicate unique cards that you eventually draw. Also, it's problematic if you don't draw a Steward of Gondor early on; Pippin will be unable to call all those ents to your aid. On the other hand, there is plenty of card draw effects (Pippin, Gandalf, Frodo's Intuition, Peace, and Thought, Steward of Orthanc) to help you find it.

Also, this deck has no protection against shadow cards, and against encounter cards it is limited to Frodo's response (make sure to always keep 1 resource on him before questing, in case of emergency).

Thank you!

I hope you enjoy playing with this deck and I'd be happy to hear suggestions from the sages!
