The Grey Wanderer now let's you play Hobbit Saga Bilbo all by his lonesome! Just assume his threat is 9 like the other versions, or use the printed 0. Whatever works for you.

Use contract set up ability to get Strider. If that is in hand, Song of Kings and if that is in hand too Song of Battle is good to play Sting.

First side quest should be The Gathering Storm to play the unique allies. Use Dúnedain Message to find it if necessary. Timely Aid and Send for Aid can also help get them into play.

Play Hobbit Saga Gandalf and keep him in play or promote him to a hero with Sword-thain thanks to low starting threat and [The Shirefolk](/card/19121. Gaffer Gamgee is another good target for Sword-thain.

Get Fast Hitches on Bilbo ASAP to abuse the stat boosting of Burglar Baggins, Halfling Determination, and Sting! Plus with The Lucky Number you can boost Gandalf to heights only seen in Gondorian Fire and Blood of Numenor decks.

Of course KET brings the deck together. If you're not familiar with the power of KET then you need to play the deck and see for yourself.

I don't think you can use The Grey Wanderer like this, since you cannot choose Baggins or Fellowship heroes as starting heroes anyway (and you cannot choose 0 starting heroes) they are put in play through campaign effects and given to control to the players

Also, from the rules insert of the first hobbit box: "As a hero, Bilbo Baggins collects 1 resource during the resource phase. However, this version of Bilbo Baggins has the text: “cannot gain resources through player card effects.”
