This is one of my favorite decks of all times. Top 3. Yeah, right there at the top. Toppity top. Why? Oh, my friend. I'll tell you why!
Do you need to quest? Oh yeah, Lothíriel has got you covered. Anyone can have 3 Willpower, though. But, she actually has at least 6 Willpower, as long as you have an ally in your hand: Lothíriel's 3, the Prince's 2 and at least 1 from an ally. And would you look at that, there are TWENTY FIVE of those in the deck!
Why am I adding Imrahil's to the total? Because you get a guaranteed activation of his ability because of his daughter's bouncing friends! This means you have it all: a 3 (almost) guaranteed each turn, 6 and, I haven't event started on Beregond with the The One Ring!
Let's do it then.
The Captain by himself is already a great defender by himself: 4HP and 4 is great. Sometimes losing the access of Tactics toys make the other Beregond shine quite a bit more for sure, but in this deck, you won't miss them that much. Having Beregond with the Ring and starting a Inner Strength already get you above most enemies' in the game, but if you eventually get a Mithril Shirt (not needed, but always interesting) you become a powerhouse! You can cancel 1 damage each round, ignore one shadow card and/or reduce your threat by 1.
After a bit, you'll be flooded with resources, so Rod of the Steward is here to make them useful. For that reason, I'm still a bit unsure if Steward should stay or not. Sometimes it's a great way to accelerate your game to reach that point, but otherwise is just 'two more resources'.
The allies choice are simple: high or good ability. The most important to note are:
- Getting Denethor usually means a successful questing that turn.
- Damrod is a great way to reduce your threat if you get 2+ enemies in the staging area and can quest comfortably (which is usually a given).
- Mablung and Faramir are great to mess with engagement, sometimes they help more than their to questing by removing an annoying enemy from the staging area.
- Derufin and Arwen Undómiel are basically the only cards you'll always want to play instead of using Lothíriel's ability, since neither can use their abilities when played through the hero's power.
The Sideboard is specific to quests with nasty locations and conditions.
Being able to quest, defend and attack, makes this deck capable of going solo, but only in quests where combat is light. You can defeat enemies, sure, but don't expect to defeat beefy Orcs with high defense or HP. That's likely not happening. If you get to such a quest, bring a friend!
