DECK NAME - Gandalf the Wight-slayer

OVERVIEW - Much like The Redhorn Gate, this quest has a "gotcha" moment that punishes indiscriminately spamming allies. It pays to know what's coming in this quest and to build your deck accordingly. We will rely on two powerful allies (Gandalf and Treebeard) while our heroes' roles are to draw cards and provide crucial questing . This deck is all about drawing cards, keeping our at 28 or below, and getting to a very specific winning board state relatively quickly.

HEROES

STRATEGY

  • OPENING HAND - hard mulligan for Keys of Orthanc
  • ROUND 1 - the deck takes advantage of the free round by including heroes with actions that can be leveraged to get us ahead; the hope is to use a resource to attach Keys of Orthanc to Galadriel and then to use Gríma's action to put out a free Nenya or a Galadhrim Minstrel; it's great if we have a A Test of Will and Elrond's Counsel in hand before the end of the round (NOTE: leave a resource on Frodo Baggins)
  • STAGE 2 - leave Hollow Circle in staging until ready to advance; all the while we will be drawing cards as much as possible and trying to accomplish the following:
    1. Attach Fellowship of the Ring to Frodo Baggins and Keys of Orthanc/Nenya/Unexpected Courage to Galadriel in round 2 if possible
    2. Play Treebeard asap so he can start accumulating resources (NOTE: it's best to put out an accompanying Galadhrim Minstrel to protect Treebeard from Ancient Barrow)
    3. Use Gríma's action to lower the cost of cards as we want to rack up on Galadriel's resource pool early (once you have engaged a Dark-wight, Keys of Orthanc won't work anymore so put that off for a few rounds)
    4. Leave all enemies in staging for now; if is ever 29 or higher play an Elrond's Counsel BEFORE STAGING
    5. At some point we will engage one Dark-wight (whether by Long Groping Arm treachery or by optional engagement when ready) and defend its attack with Treebeard; attach a Forest Snare to it the following round
    6. Once we have our first Dark-wight w Forest Snare, we can now travel to Hollow Circle and select a second Dark-wight to engage; block attack with Treebeard and slap Forest Snare on it the following round
    7. Before clearing Hollow Circle, play Gandalf and Gandalf's Staff if you haven’t done so (NOTE: you may have a playthrough where staging becomes overrun with enemies and/or you just can't draw into a Dark-wight forcing you to bring Gandalf out sooner than outline here)
  • STAGE 3 and 4 - immediately travel to Standing Stones which will add a copy of Great Barrow to staging, forcing us to relocate to stage 4a; put stage 3B, Standing Stones (active location) and all cards in staging to the side; the only thing that goes with us to 4a are the enemies engaged with us; because we have 2 Dark-wights we discard any Galadhrim Minstrel but retain Gandalf and Treebeard; destroy any and all enemies that you encounter at this stage (using Gandalf's Staff to discard shadows); we should easily quest past 4B in one round
  • STAGE 3 (final) - when you go back to stage 3, Standing Stones is once again the active location and the set aside staging area returns; any cards in staging we added while at stage 4 are added to the stage 3 staging area but since we engaged and destroyed all enemies we shouldn't have to do this; engage one enemy each round and destroy it and quest for the win asap (NOTE: use Shadow of the Past to avoid another Great Barrow)
