Thematic War Of The Rohirrim deck to bring the animated movie to life, using cardpool likeness to reflect the characters as best possible for Solo play.
“Riders of the Mark, brothers of Rohan… Arise!” Helm Hammerhand (Thengel)
- Widfast as Hera, our fiery haired heroine, with thematic connection to Horses and Eagles per the movie. With her setup effect suggest grab The Riddermark's Finest (aka Ashere) for free first turn, 2 progress on active location for Burglar's Turn Progress and triggering Thengel’s effect which gives lovely acceleration for free. Otherwise perhaps Meneldor pending the scenario set up.
- Thengel as Helm Hammerhand, the larger than life, armored, menacing power and art felt more than appropriate
- Háma as himself, with the key focus on recurring Need Brooks No Delay to accelerate the board
- Elfhelm as Haleth, nice artwork with his action and discard sacrifice reflecting his devotion to protecting Rohan
- Éomund as Fréaláf, the selfless Rohan/Gondor young noble committed to the cause and rallying the Rohirrim
- Morwen Steelsheen as Olywn, our favorite shieldmaiden
- Meneldor depicting the eagles
It’s a twist on a Rohan discard deck but with no attachments/mounts, just heroic acts, it feels fitting given the movie and the focus on sacrifice for the good of Rohan. The Burglar's Turn with no attachments is a fun way to fuel the discard engine by having c.40 allies in the deck, whilst still getting to use thematic cards like Horn of the Mark, Ancestral Armor and Gúthwinë through the contract.
There are no fire red haired female heroes of Rohan available (plus Eowyn is narrator of WotR so would be wrong to use her) so whilst not a stipulation I opted to use Widfast as Hera and house ruled swapping her Woodsman trait for Rohan as Hera for thematic reasons, but that’s up to you (still works without just need to save your Hama tactics resources for Brooks).
General Play
- Helm Hammerhand / Thengel discard effect you want to trigger every turn plus Need Brooks No Delay as many times as possible to accelerate board. As noted picking The Riddermark's Finest at setup with Hera/Widfast really accelerates things, recurring one with Gamling / Guthwine is great too. He can do a pretty solid job defending/questing
- The Burglar's Turn to get attachments from sideboard into play, Widfast/Hera and Gavin and other location control The Riddermark's Finest Meneldor et al to get through locations and win your items. This contract also means you have c.40 allies so chance of hitting with Helm/Thengel every turn is very high
- Háma to recur Need Brooks No Delay, aim for it in 1st hand / mulligan then you have at least 4-6 plays of it over the course of the game, he is a pretty potent attacker.
- Various other fun Rohan tricks from discard (especially as without attachments Helm/Thengel isn’t a ready to roll defender eg Grimbold/Scout), Morwen/Olwyn for threat/healing control, the deck is super fun and lots of choices whilst staying Thematic (where possible).
Welcome any feedback or ideas or further enhance the power or thematic play! Hope you enjoy this attempt to bring War of the Rohirrim to life. For Rohan!!

May 31, 2025Yessir, The Riddermark's Finest combo of being free first turn + as you say Thengel trigger + putting 2 on location to progress Burglars Turn is lovely as well as staying thematic. Once Gamling is up and running (easy to find with Brooks) recurring a Riddermarks Finest eats up locations and gets attachments out asap. |
nice, startig with a free discardable ally and trigger Thengel
