Discard Pile

Synopsis
My take on the Caldara deck.
Design
As with most traditional Caldara decks, the engine requires options to build up the discard pile, and consistent recursion of Fortune or Fate.
Card discard is powered by Éowyn and Zigil Miner.
Fortune or Fate recursion is accomplished by Dwarven Tomb and Map of Earnil.
Fortune or Fate is paid for by Zigil Miner and Good Meal.
Strategy
Mulligan for Zigil Miner, and use him liberally to fill up the discard pile. Once you get Imladris Stargazer out, you can stack the deck in your favor, and maybe even hit upon a Hidden Cache or two.
Good Meal will help pay for Fortune or Fate, though sometimes it can be worth a timely Shadows Give Way.
The nay-sayers that condemn Caldara often employ the bad math "5 resources for 2 allies is hardly a deal". In actuality, the 5 resources buys you the following:
- two allies
- a larger card source (the discard acts as an "extended hand")
- up to three actions
- phase-independent ally mustering
Here's a potential scenario:
- Caldara commits to the quest
- During staging, you are overwhelmed with enemies
- You chump-block two attacks and lose two allies
- Caldara uses her ability to bring two combat-ready allies back from the discard (maybe even one of the chumps!)
- Frodo Baggins eats a good meal and uses Fortune or Fate to bring Caldara back
- Caldara and the two allies swing back at the attackers, thanks to three bonus actions!
Performance
I've paired this with a variety of combat-oriented decks, and have been able to get through all three quests of The Lost Realm (yes, even Deadmen's Dike, though it was a tough fight).
