Greensbrew 83

This is a kind of cracy deck idea that I think is worth sharing and refining, so that it might be played with decent reliablility. Basically, it is the two armies fighting alongside each other much like you remember good old Helm's Deep. On the board you get the Rohan army on one side and the Silvan on the other, each with their captain in the front, and then the dubious Gríma somewhere in between, doing his thing... Quite a setup for a good battle!

  • Build

It is quite a challenge to build given the required balance between the two factions of allies and the inclusion of needed events... But at least it is the most No-brainer candidate for The Burglar's Turn that I have come upon!

I hope that some around here have suggestions for the concept in whatever direction. Although I have done some tweaking, some new eyes might help it.

Threat might be the biggest weaknes of this build, so Elfhelm and Galadriel's Handmaiden are very important here. Well Warned can work well with Orophin or Ceorl and is affordable, which is much needed. Sadly there isn't any real threat reduction to Burgle for.

Shadow control is also underrepresented short of Silver Lamp, but Quicker Than Sight could be good for these more or less game ending shadows.

Of the 37 allies 20 are rohan. So far, I have always mustered at least 3 rohan allies.

Daeron's Runes work great with Orophin.

Archery and such can often be soaked by temporary allies, and hopefully a Galadhrim Healer shows up.

A Test of Will is probably a keeper for most scenarios because of the frailty of such an army against certain treacheries, but it can be tempting to switch it with other cards.

  • Testing:

I played it a bit in OCTGN and I succesfully cleared Intruders in Chetwood, completely ignoring the burgling part for less of a hassle with OCTGN and with a less optimized version that this one. I could'nt have won that without early Elfhelm though, except maybe if I had seen some Handmaidens. I lost the first game by meeting 3 Orc War Parties in the first 4 rounds, auch...

I tested this version without burgling against The Antlered Crown, and I survived until the last stage in 2-3 tries, but it seemed very likely that I would have survived if I also had the power from burgling. So hey! I imagine that it works well enough to take against many scenarios, despite being such a difficult build.

I will probably soon assemble this to the table and try to overrun some orcs or Dunlendings...

  • Burgling:

Just a rather quick sketch so far. Attack, defense, and resources are all very helpful loot here, and the swords of Rohan fit so well, especially Gúthwinë. And woe to the bastard that stole these royal heirlooms! The Arkenstone is another decent one. Elven Mail could work too.
Naith Guide is great for making the heroes' loot count a good deal, same with Westfold Horse-Breaker.

I certainly look forward to playing this deck concept against Helm's Deep some time. I might just say that Grima turned disloyal to Saruman and by some fanciful means gave a convincing reason to trust him... Hey, maybe he is the lead Burglar here! :-P
