Splice 469

Splice has a newer deck inspired by this one: Pipe down you Hobbits! with new Pipe & event

This deck is so much fun because you basically get to control the threat for the entire table and can often end the game at 0 threat yourself. The Arod represents the Spare pipe and the Close Call is smoke and think.

The basic strategy is to Mulligan for Hobbit pipes and/or Bilbo. This is the core piece of the engine to let you draw all the cards to find those early resourcefuls. I try to get a fast hitch on each character and friend of friends go on Folco and Frodo. The reason I have Folco in the deck over Pippen is to start you at 17 threat and his 2attack (3 with friend of friends) is important to deal with the enemies you might get.

Don't be afraid to take undefended attacks since frodo can take the threat and then you can drop right back down with all your events.

Let me know what you think!

with bilbo motk you can start with a pipe. would change merry. a bit faster think.

I’m not sure I agree with Doomguard. I have a similar deck with Pippin instead of Folco and I wouldn’t get rid of Merry for the world. With Hobbit Pony and Unexpected Courage (Fast Hitch in your case), you can routinely lower your threat by 2-4 every turn and still quest.

i doubt you reveal an enemy each round. thread seems not to be the problem. and, you can start earlier with the reducing events. and you start with 2 less thread

if you have courage, you do not need the pony ;) (and he has no pony)

Revealing an enemy every round depends on the number of players, doesn't it? The deck seems to be a multiplayer-only deck anyway.

@doomguardi want to do some testing with what you suggest. I often use Bilbo to chump block when I get another in my hand to dog out more pipes but that might not be an issue with the Mulligan and 1 starting in the hand. Merry is definitely important when playing 3-4p but when I played 2p last night I didn't need his ability as much.

@ticklerit is definitely multiplayer focused! I've played it 2-4 players and it does great. I plan to do a little testing on what I could swap out the songs of earendil for in a true solo game.

for solo you need some punch. suggest treebraed and 2 northern tracker or rhovanion outrider. frode defenses well, but its hard to kill something

Friendly reminder to @Flamewright there are no action windows during the Encounter phase so Merry must be ready and can only ever be used once (cannot be readied by Unexpected Courage or Fast Hitch I have played many a hobbit deck and it wasn't until recently that my friend and I double checked the rules because we felt Merry was incredibly abusive

Hi @nvbostwick! Maybe you mean the Quest phase? Then there're action windows that allow you to ready Merry and use his skill to low the threat.

if you can refresh him he is usable for questing and 1 time per questphase using his ability, if an enemy will be revealed. even with 2 players an enemy is not sure and 4 thread have very few enemy, that will be revealed from the encounterdeck. you can´t use his ability twice in one questphase, because, while encountercards are revealed there is no actionwindow. send to quest, then refresh, then staging and use the ability is fine. my experience is 1-3 thread if an enemy is revealed. about 60% in a 2-player-game.

Sorry, I haven't read well and I understood the discussion was about Merry could not be ready before revealing encounter cards as the named phase was "Encounter" and I guess you were talking about "Quest".

Yes, once per Quest phase :)

You can use Doughty Ranger and Wingfoot and Leather Boots in multiplayer to use Merry more than once. It's a lot of set-up, but it's pretty fun. I had a deck that did that and it was fun lowering threat 1 or 2 extra times when that perfect cascade of cards came up.

I forgot the obligatory: Arwen and Gandalf are two very popular cards (Sneak-Galf and Arwen hero). So be prepared to lose one or both when you sit down with other people. Losing Arwen in your case is also losing E's Counsel, so I would recommend Free to Choose or use the Hobbit Pony / Windfola + Elevenses "combo" to make up for that.

Jun 28, 2020 Splice 469

@Madd.Dawgggood points! Normally losing gandalf isn't a huge deal for some of the multiplayer games because someone at the table will most likely have some ranged to help with the combat. Free to choose is a good option I haven't tried. At con of the rings I did put in Lindir which worked but wasnt as great. Another weird option could be to put in Elf-friend and Mirkwood Long-knife to help with the combat/noldor issue

How do you pay for Arod with this deck? I don't see any way of building Tactics resources?
