This is a deck I built to start a new solo saga campaign. So far it has beaten the first quest and the two POD quests with relative ease.

In previous Hobbit decks I’ve built the focus has been on pumping Sam Gamgee into a defensive monster. Thanks to Bond of Friendship, Tom Cotton fits that roll nicely instead, leaving Sam to help throw in some attacking help against enemies that come out.

Card draw is great between Pippin, Gandalf, and Frodo's Intuition (which draws you five cards). Red Book of Westmarch typically goes on Pippen to do the Gaffer Gamgee effect every turn.

Threat reduction has been fine so far between Merry and The Shirefolk (and Gandalf in a pinch).

I might end up adding a couple of healing cards, as I can foresee that becoming a problem with some of the quests that have high archery.

The first two cuts would likely be Take No Notice and Hobbit-sense, although they have proved situationally useful a couple of times.

I’m not sure I’ll take this deck through the entire campaign. Frankly it may not be good enough to go up against some of the later quests. But it has been a lot of fun to play so far!

I’m working on a similar deck but was looking at having: Tactics Merry, Sam, Spirit Pippin and Folco Boffin. I don’t see myself not having Tac Merry as he’s such a beast with a dagger. (For the non-Frodo sagas I would revert to having Spirit Frodo and Lore Pippin).

Do you feel like you’ve been missing on Tac Merry? Tom seems like a beast but relies on a stream of hobbit allies to get value.

I just finished a full campaign with this same line-up as one of my two decks! Super fun. A few other cards that added some excitement were Thorongil to get Tactics Merry and then Sword-Thain on someone like Rosie to get even more out of Merry along with some extra resources and more cards from Frodo's Intuition. Dagger of Westerness is always a solid choice if you can fit it. Also Gather Information is not a bad option for helping you find that one piece you're missing.

Thanks for the comments!

@chaser12 I think Thorongil and Sword-thain might be good subs for Hobbit-sense.

@Lixia Tom has proven to be more important than I first estimated. The resource smoothing he provides while holding down an enemy is essential because you can spend the resources from Frodo to save up for the more expensive cards like Red Book of Westmarch. And the plus 2 attack to allies compensates some for the loss of attack from Merry. I like the suggestion of adding Thorongil on Merry to get that attack boost, though.
