This was a list that grew out of two things. The first was my desire to pair Vigilant Guard with Beorn and Gimli. At the time, I had a list with Na'asiyah, my Hero of the Month for March, and felt the deck to be clunky. That list has not seen the light of day. Mablung gave the deck a little more efficiency and other cards seemed to just fall into place once he was along for the ride and Na'asiyah left behind :(
Anyway, the deck is all about combat. Engage enemies, defend with Beorn and/or Mablung(with Gondorian Shield) and use Vigilant Guard to slowly beef up Gimli. Once you're done defending, use the Bear and the Dwarf to pick off enemies. If things get dicey, Feint, Horn's Cry, and Thicket of Spears are included to buy you some time. Once Gimli is up and running Quick Strike can perform a similar role but at the added bonus of eliminating an enemy before they even matter.
While Dwarrowdelf Axe helps propel Gimli's damage dealing abilities, Firefoot is worth replacing one of the axes. There aren't a lot of options to ready Gimli for another attack, so Firefoot can help fill that gap by spilling damage over to another enemy.
The biggest card to mulligan for is Vigilant Guard. Outside of that, Honour Guard Boots from Erebor, or Gondorian Shield aren't half bad and can buy you some time until you get what you need.
Obviously some major flaws in this deck are a lack of consistent card draw (which is just a tactics thing... no shaking that) and threat. While the deck doesn't really need to make any adjustments if another player sends some card draw your way, I would argue switching out Secret Vigil for something else if another player has reliable threat reduction capabilities.
All in all, it's a fun deck and I'm glad to have an excuse to get Beorn back to the table!
Here's a (silly)post on the blog regarding the deck as well.
