Went searching for At the End of All Things decks and realised with the nuances and limitations of the contract its perhaps not as well loved as others... Forth, The Three Hunters! though here we have different tools and can use select powerful allies. Having playtested solo, this deck allows you to get through quests quickly, ideal for the time conscious player.
The general concept is reaping the rewards (trade offs) of the Contract, use the low starting threat of 23 for Haldir of Lórien staging attack deleting nasties without engaging (whilst offering more balance for solo vs some of the The Grey Wanderer Haldir only versions which can be more squishy). The tools that come with only having 2 heroes are great At the End of All Things stat and action boosts, Vanish from Sight & Strider, allowing Eowyn to play dual quester & defender every turn. Get Firyal into play on Round 4 when contract flips (as a good as third hero in solo but without the starting threat increase to allow max Haldir staging fun). Firyal allows for meaningful progress and encounter deck control every round.
First 3 Rounds: You can only have 2 heroes, they cant be healed, get resources from attachments, and have a +4 threat increase each, sounds gnarly..
- Mulligan Hard for Strider, put it on Eowyn so she has non exhausting 7 , you now have 10 across her and Haldir from round 1, with option to ready Haldir with contract if needed to snipe. This means you can be aggressive with early location & quest progress vs alot of other lower threat decks that rely on turtling first couple of rounds. Hands Upon the Bow with Contract Readying Combo for Haldir also helpful with pre quest resolution threat and allows for multiple staging attacks in one round.
- Resources are scarce with this contract but due to contract the 2 per turn can be used for either or , so the lions share of cards are 0/1 cost to still allow for multiple plays and event triggers as needed
- You want to see Golden Shield for Eowyn early incase a pesky auto engage or low threat gets through (then she can take a Burning Brand a little later too thanks to the contract resource icon). Get a weapon, Bow or Axe on Haldir along with Strength and Courage.
- If get an early Foe-hammer (which could draw and activate Proud Hunters) and/or Master of the Forge / Gléowine online you will have plenty of cards for Protector of Lórien for selective or .
Contract Flip & End Game:
- On Round 4 we can flip our contract which is typically sensible to do, search for Firyal & Wingfoot and play them both for your 6 resource boost. Firyal is now scrying the deck, whilst Wingfoot uses Firyal's effect to ensure Haldir can quest and be ready for attacking. This means you now have minimum of 13 with just Eowyn, Haldir and Firyal with Haldir and Eowyn ready for combat.
- Protector of Lórien is clutch in late/end game given the array of draw events and ally responses, gives further control across phases.
- From Round 4 onward the increased Control allows you to navigate and ensure have ducks in a row to get through the final stages of the quest.
- Fun Combo: Éowyn 'I Am No Man' Mode: Not normally essential but fun when get Elf Friend, Golden Belt and Andúril on Eowyn alongside Strider which gives you non exhausting quester with extra readying. With Protector x3 discard, you can non exhaust quest push with her for 11 , defend at 11-14 with Burning Brand cancellation and ready with Anduril, then attack TWICE for 12 per swing thanks to her own effect, all in one round.... (+ Haldir can support once or twice... with another 6-10) each time, clearing the board/bosses
- Haleth likely becomes your 5th character (letting master of forge or otherwise pass to the west) to maintain the Strider Boost.
- Have found the Control management of this deck is impressive, as not only scrying but you can make progress on locations and handles the majority of enemies in staging area.
Staging Attack Alternative: Herubrand vs Eowyn for accelerated card draw and extra Staging Attack theme, though personally in playtesting found I missed Eowyn's -2 starting threat and break glass.
Thanks again ALeP!
