This deck is specifically built to do the Mount Doom quest. This version is for multiplayer. I haven't tried the quest yet, but I've tested the concept on some other quests.
WARNING: some mild spoilers ahead!
The big problem here is resources. Normally in a Caldara deck I would run the usual Zigil combo:
Unfortunately, in this quest more allies = bad, so I'm working on other options. Even though the Ered Luins make great chumps for free, I don't think I can afford to keep the Zigils and Imladrim. Without Stargazers, the Miners are too hit-or-miss; Emery is just going to discard whatever she finds.
There's a great new combo here, which I have to credit to a friend (but I can't because he doesn't have a ringsdb account). I'm going to use Caldara's action, then play Vanish from Sight, and follow that up with O Elbereth! Gilthonial! Since my threat counts as 20, I will then set my threat (probably lowering it) to the targeted enemy's threat!
For saga quests, this only works in multiplayer. If I have a Fellowship sphere hero, I can't play Vanish from Sight. But, since I'm building that combo, I'm also going to run Resourceful with it. and try to solve my money problems that way. I'm also adding a Wandering Took and Song of EƤrendil, to steal all the other players' threat right before I Elbereth.
Other than that, I'm trying to quest for tons, but not have a lot of allies. I also want to make some pretty big Fortitude tests, so I want heroes with high willpower... and I want LOTS of heroes. So, my allies fall into three basic groups:
- Allies with 3+ willpower
- Cheap or free chumps, or REALLY good blockers
- Lindir
Card draw is a big problem in this deck, but I have as much as I can manage. As usual, the sideboard has a bunch of stuff I tried and barely ever used, so I cut it. One final note: this deck is great when Condition attachments happen, because it can just toss them onto Caldara or Prince Imrahil, and then kill them off.
I'm thinking this unfortunately doesn't work for Mount Doom specifically due to the Dire keyword. I know that O Elbereth! Gilthonial! uses the term "set" instead of "reduce," but it's effectively reducing your threat, and I think it definitely goes against the spirit of the quest. I've been running a Caldara deck for my entire solo campaign, but I've hit a wall with this quest :(
