Point of this deck is to showcase the armies of Gondor by using the combined power of Minas Tirith and the Outlands. Allies have global bonuses coming from Gondor and Outlands traits and they'll be doing most of the work. Here's how it goes:
- questing: heroes suck at questing, so we'll struggle in the early rounds. Global bonuses will help us here, so we need to get this stuff out ASAP: Faramir, Visionary Leadership and Ethir Swordsman will do a lot for us. Got to survive the early rounds somehow.
- defending: Denethor will be the dedicated defender among the heroes, with Hirluin the Fair possibly taking that place when he gets buffed up. Cheaper allies can be used as chump blockers as well.
- attacking: Boromir should help with this, especially considering the global bonus he provides to Gondor allies. Strength of Arms can be used to clear the board of enemies when there's a lot of allies available.
- healing: nothing for now, might be a problem.
- shadow cards: Armored Destrier helps here.
- treacheries: no help, just deal with it.
- readying: Strength of Arms could be a key card, allowing us to make a strong push in the later rounds when there are a lot of allies on the board. Both Heir of Mardil and Armored Destrier can keep the heroes ready. Hirluin the Fair is the best candidate for readying given his versatility, but the other two heroes could use it as well.
- resource: Steward of Gondor goes on Denethor, Wealth of Gondor will hopefully arrive early in the game.
- card draw: Rod of the Steward can help us with this when we start accumulating resources. Prepare for Battle can be used to balance the deck if card draw starts being a problem.
- threat: Gandalf can be used in time of need.
After testing this deck on a couple of Heirs of Numenor quests, it worked out pretty good. I first thought that the lack of willpower might be a problem, but quests in that cycle often switch between the regular, battle and siege quests. This deck ended up being quite flexible, given that it does not excel in any of those categories. It's average/good enough so it works. I think it might need some help with more combat heavy scenarios, hopefully I'll get to test that soon.

Jan 05, 2020This deck is going strong through the Against the Shadow cycle. I've used it to beat the all the scenarios in Heirs of Numenor deluxe and the following APs up to Assault on Osgiliath. Still have to test it on the final two scenarios of the cycle. I've had a couple of losses but that was due to learning since I've never played these scenarios before. Once I knew what the strategy needs to be, it ran pretty smooth. On roughly half of those scenarios I've had help from a supporting mono tactics deck - ringsdb.com I've used it for more combat intensive scenarios, it synergises pretty well due to global Gondor bonuses coming from Boromir and Visionary Leadership. |
Thanks for posting this. I only recently bought Heirs of Numenor and had been trying something similar to this. Denethor and Rod of the Steward seem to fix the issues I had been having with card draw and having the correct resources ready to go.
