Card Talk 1249
Back in the day my cohost, Grant Thompson, would talk about how awesome his "Dunhere Duck Shoot" deck in almost every show. He loved it so much that we disagreed about how good Dúnhere is when we reviewed him HERE. He claimed that he could get his threat down to zero in many play throughs. I believe him, of course, but he utilized cards like The Galadhrim's Greeting and Elrond's Counsel to reduce threat, and not just Fastred. To honor Grant and his love of Dúnhere, I present my updated Forth, The Three Hunters! version of his deck.
This deck pilots much like every other Forth, The Three Hunters! deck. Get out the restricted attachments, flip the contract, then fiddle around with where the attachments go later. But here are some pointers about what you should have where to get maximum effect out of the deck. But with Fastred's built in lowering, its very likely that you don't ever get a threat higher than your starting . Of course coupled with Dúnhere and his ability to attack into the staging area gives this duo a great synergy that cannot be denied.
Spear of the Mark and Dagger of Westernesse should obviously go on Dúnhere. If you can get him to 7 or 9 in the staging area, that helps slaughter enemies. It's not vital that he get an Unexpected Courage, but if you can't find a Rohan Warhorse, then the Unexpected Courage is just as good.
Éowyn should really get a Silver Circlet, Windfola and maybe Snowmane, but maybe not. I have found dumping a Round Shield on her after the contract flips is good. Surprisingly, Éowyn has really just one purpose full time purpose in the deck, and that's to quest. So readying effects don't have to go on here. Although popping her party trick once a game usually happens and if Hour of Wrath is in in hand, she can wipe the board.
And Fastred is really where things get interesting. Of course he gets The One Ring, could get Raiment of War, a Round Shield, but I have been having a bunch of fun giving him the Golden Shield and boosting his by a least 4 when the contract is flipped. The Hill Troll just bounces off him. Giving him Unexpected Courage, Magic Ring, and even Snowmane for those quests you need more than what Éowyn alone can provide is great.
Some wild cards are Raiment of War which can go on either Dúnhere or Fastred and Captain of Gondor which can also go on either.
I know. I know. With Dúnhere, it's almost criminal not running Quick Strike. But the point is to actually engage enemies and push them pack into the staging area to reduce threat.
Other options are to give The One Ring to Dúnhere and give him Strength and Courage right out of the gate, giving him 5 without even trying.
Coincidentally, I'm in the midst of building a similar deck and looking forward to giving it a spin. Is it an oversight mentioning that Eowyn should get Silver Circlet, since it's only limited to Spirit heroes?
