Solo Progression Deck

Shadows of Mirkwood & Ringmaker

Intro

I attempted Journey to Rhosgobel on easy mode with a different deck, swapping out Aragorn for Legolas for one, but gave up after a couple tries. Many of the early quests feel like they require a very specific general strategy to beat, and using that strategy makes the quest a bit too easy. Rhosgobel, on the other hand, requires a very specific deck if you want a chance at surviving. "Eagles, healing, cancel everything, stack the encounter deck" is not interesting to me, so I skipped that quest.

Starting Hand

Steward of Gondor is the obvious best starting card in the deck, but Song of Kings, Celebrían's Stone, Rivendell Minstrel, Ancient Mathom, and Gléowine are other great options for helping you set up. For Journey Down the Anduin or Conflict at the Carrock, The Galadhrim's Greeting or Gandalf can put Trolls on a strict "no-heroes" diet.

Early Game

Early on, you'll want to use The Galadhrim's Greeting and Denethor to avoid engaging really tough encounter cards. Just keep playing allies and attachments to incrementally increase your stats. Take enemies as soon as you can defeat them in a single attack. Daughter of the Nimrodel is another great card to see.

As counterintuitive as it is, Steward of Gondor works best on Éowyn, as she can pay for anything Aragorn would if you draw Song of Kings. You are more likely to draw Song of Kings than Celebrian's Stone, so keep that in mind.

Mid Game

Denethor should be immortal with Daughter of the Nimrodel and Dúnedain Warning. Protector of Lórien serves as a fail safe for larger enemies. Dúnedain Mark and a couple of cheap allies should get you up to 6, but it can be a bit difficult, since this deck doesn't have .

Late Game

This deck can quest for quite a bit thanks to Celebrian's Stone, The Favor of the Lady, and a bunch of cheap allies. Combat can be a bit more difficult, but you can use Unexpected Courage on Denethor to avoid the worst of combat.

On Using Aragorn

Knowing how to use Aragorn is the hardest part of piloting this deck. Generally speaking, you can judge when to use him based on 3 factors:

factor yes no
is threat building up in the staging area? use [Lórien Guide](/card/01044), [Radagast's Cunning](/card/01065), or [Strider's Path](/card/02009); else quest with Aragorn [Éowyn](/card/01007) can usually handle the bulk of questing
is it likely you'll be engaged with more than 1 enemy? keep Aragorn ready: this deck has no defending allies, and chumping isn't sustainable you may need to leave him ready to smite something
will you need to smite something? unless it's the Eastern Crows, you'll probably want him ready can safely quest without readying him

These are just guidelines, not rigid rules.

Sideboard

  • [Miner of the Iron Hills](/card/01061) in quests with condition attachments
  • You can use [Forest Snare](/card/01069) for the Hill Troll, but it's more fun to beat it without the permanent stun.
  • [Lore of Imladris](/card/01063) is for custom quests using the Rhosgobel encounter set
