bane 81
After 6 iterations, I finally found one I am completely happy with.
The Grey Wanderer is such a broken contract, it more than makes up for the lack of extra heroes.
Specially for this deck, due to the low starting threat, you can easily forego the first questing phase in most quests and you're likely to stay in Secrecy nonetheless.
Notes
- Start with Mirror of Galadriel.
- It'll help you look for the most important cards;
- Losing allies to the Mirror is not really that much of a problem.
- You're playing the long game here, once table position is stablished you're quite likely to win.
- First card played each turn should be preferably Timely Aid or A Very Good Tale.
- Mulligan for, in order of importance:
- When you play Gandalf, pay attention to your hand and your resources, you might not want to keep him in play if you can play another one next turn without much hassle. That 2 extra threat can matter!
- You want allies in play as soon as possible. The first ones should help in questing, then combat.
- Ioreth + Nenya is a great first hand, as it'll quest for 4 without needing to exhaust for a total of 2 resources (Nenya).
Possible Modifications
Due to how the Mirror works, you might be inclined to think of Will of the West, which is reasonable. I did have it in other versions but eventually took it off. Send for Aid was one of the last additions, I'm not thaaaat convinced about it yet, but just because I'm suspicious like that. There hasn't been one game where it wasn't useful and, considering your capabilities are high, this Side Quest is an easy one to slot in. It also helps Thalion to potentially become a Hero. Dori has saved me quite a few times, but I think he should be replaced by something else for good players (i.e., not me). It's kind of a safeguard against mistakes/bad plays in this deck, since you're likely to have good defense in most situations.
If you're playing in a multiplayer, you might want to attach Resourceful to your friend, as while extra res is always good, it's likely to be even better to a friend in need. When playing with friends, remember Jubayr and Arwen Undómiel's target are Sentinel, while Yazan is ranged; Dúnedain Wanderer is both. In fact, Háma can become a huge boon with Arwen's ability in a pinch.
Record
This solo deck has beat every single Nightmare quest in the core (except for Escape from Dol Guldur, for obvious reasons) and the Shadows of Mirkwood cycle... except for goddamn A Journey to Rhosgobel.
...and counting!
