frozen has a newer deck inspired by this one: Mono-Lore Trap Toolkit

This deck is a Mono-Lore deck tooled for multiplayer that can be brought to a fellowship and provide a lot of different options depending on the scenario.

The deck's primary purpose is traps, of course, using Damrod as always to play them cheap and get some cards drawn. Getting a Master of the Forge out early is also key, as he can help find more traps and also grab several of our hero-readying attachments.

As a Mono-Lore deck, Mithrandir's Advice is a must and with it and Daeron's Runes you should have tons of different options in hand depending on what the scenario is asking of you. The deck is somewhat expensive so another key piece of the Mono-Lore strategy is to use Daeron's Discard and Protector of Lórien to get The Great Hunt and Gildor's Counsel into the discard pile so Scroll of Isildur can play them for cheap.

The deck can also be re-tooled to different strategies depending on the quest, using the sideboard:

-Location Control - As published, use Strider's Path to power Ghân-buri-Ghân. In location heavy scenarios, Leather Boots should provide plenty of readying -Combat - swapping out that combo for Lembas and Loyal Hound can help provide additional combat support

is aragorn this important? else you can go to secrecy and use the benefits (Resourceful, Ithilien Lookout, Risk Some Light, Out of the Wild)

using (MotK) Ioreth instead of aragorn, gives you a buffer for secrecy and healing from the start.

if you think Ghân-buri-Ghân is important for the strategy of the deck, you can start with him as (MotK) Ghân-buri-Ghân and be still in secrecy (x counts as 0 if not defined)

No real reason for Aragorn, other than that he just fit with the ranger-ish theme. And his stats fit the "balanced so you can deal with anything" kind of idea I was going for. But yeah he can be a liability in a large fellowship where someone else might want to use him instead.

I could definitely see the power of a secrecy deck here with many of the cards switched out. I don't own MotK so I don't usually consider it when making decks myself.

motk is a real adding to deckbuilding.....

but even without it, with Pippin or Sméagol you can start in secrecy, but then perhaps you need Keen as Lances for thread reduction.

I really like the concept of this deck; it looks like fun! A couple of things that sprang to mind:

-Unfortunately, Scroll of Isildur doesn't actually provide cost reduction (you still have to pay the full cost for whatever event you are pulling from your discard pile). An alternative way to save resources could be to swap in Pippin (as @doomguard mentioned above) and then run Resourceful or Good Meal. The Great Hunt can't really have its cost reduced anyway since you have to use three different heroes to pay for it.

-If you decide to keep Aragorn, I might consider adding A Burning Brand to take better advantage of his sentinel ability, and maybe even Keen Longbow to give him ranged so that he can provide attack support as well.

-Depending on how long the scenario is, I might also throw in some way of recurring your traps (either Anborn or Erebor Hammersmith) so that you don't run out of the more powerful ones.

-Have you considered running Advance Warning as a way to set up The Great Hunt? That would combo really well with Good Meal if you went that route.

Again, this looks like a lot of fun to play (for you and for the other decks benefitting from the support. Well done!

Oh man, I totally missed the bit about Scroll of Isildur. I was never sure how it got around the requirements for Great Hunt, so that definitely clears it up. And erebor Hammersmith is a good suggestion, I forget that guy even has an ability! With all of this feedback and understanding the cards better, I guess I will get started on v2! Glad to know I'm on the right track though!

Why don't you play Anborn so that you could recycle used traps ?

Jul 12, 2022 frozen 172

Well, the deck already struggles a bit with the cost of the cards, as other commenters have pointed out, so it might be hard to afford him.

I also don't feel like I have a lot of traps that need recycling - really just ambush. Forest Snare you might never discard, Ranger Spikes the same, if you're lucky.

If Anborn had ranged or if I made room for Elf-Stone, I might feel differently. But I think the suggestion above to add Erebor Hammersmith to get even a couple traps back should be good enough for most quests.
