Disclaimer : I decided to play the deluxe expansions following the order of the story they are telling us : the adventures of a bunch of heroes, coming from Grey Havens to help Gondor finding lord Faramir and are involved in bigger and bigger quests. I played those scenarios in the most roleplay way, with thematic characters and items.
First cycle : heirs of Numenor + against the shadow.
Second cycle : voice of Isengard + ringmaker.
Third cycle : lost realm + Angmar awakened.
Fourth cycle : Grey Havens + Dream-chaser.
Fifth cycle : the sands of Harad + haradrim.
Sixth cycle : the wilds of Rhovanion + Ered Mithrin.
Seventh cycle : a shadow in the East + vengeance of Mordor.
The original core deck was Fastred, Dúnhere and Éowyn with the objective to avoid fight, stacking enemies in the staging area in order to kill them with Ride Them Down and rushing quests. Yet, the lack of combat and defense was too problematic.
The deck
Always following the idea of dodging enemies, I try to play like a scout in order to move fast and perform quick attacks. The idea is to avoid fight till the time you can isolate your target and strike hard (no high cost cards and a good part of 0 costs cards to play a maximum of cards at the timely moment).
Grey Cloak and Feint are here to buy you time and can be back up by Elfhelm and Grimbold. North Realm Lookout can wears a cloak or carry a Round Shield or a Bow of Yew questing for 2 without exhaust. Strength of Will works with Idraen and Curious Brandybuck which feeds Éomer capacity.
Ideal turn is quest at an average 7/9 . Location explored, ready Idraen. Travel, play the hobbit, exhaust, 2 points with Strength of Will. Exhaust Westfold Outrider and Grey Cloak to avoid an enemy. Discard the outrider just before the attacking enemies step of the combat phase. Hit at an average 10.
Sideboard
Very classic choices to had more firepower against painful locations or enemies. The Wizards's Voice is here to prevent swarm scenarios and Helm! Helm! to discard big enemies like mumaks.
Weaknesses
Draw can be a problem and so encounter cards that force you to discard your hand or trash your deck. As you don't have Gamling to recruse rohan allies, discard too soon an ally can become very complicated when you would need it at a specific moment. Playing without a strong defender makes this deck very vulnerable against agressive encounter decks, low threat enemies or scenario situations that break the classic engagement rules (as three trials for example).
Roleplay fault
North Realm Lookout should scouts the wilds around Dale, but his combination with Grey Cloak makes him very stylish and useful to play. Concerning Idraen I assumed that there are some connections between the rangers of Arnor and The Gondor, so that Rohan too. Idraen could have come help Rohan with a Curious Brandybuck and a Ancient Mathom in her luggage.
