A fun deck bringing out willpower on the table while staying extremely low in threat,
The thematic idea is to give our valourous hobbits what they need to enjoy their favorite addiction. That's how I had the idea to make Bilbo Baggins a hero with Messenger of the King. Bilbo Hero for the right price, it finally happens!
Bilbo Baggins allows me to fetch from the setup the first Hobbit Pipe which will be the draw engine, combine with threat reduction events like Smoke Rings and The Shirefolk.
To bring that combo up and running, I can count on Drinking Song, Deep Knowledge and Pippin's ability.
Around the pipes, I like Old Toby and Smoke Rings, but they are a little bit expensive to play regularly. So Resourceful is a must. Also, in the last pack of the 10th cycle will come 2 cards that fit right in the deck : Spare pipe (proxyed here with Dwarven pipe) and Smoke And Think (Proxyed here with Late Adventurer).
Spare Pipe is a 1 cost spirit attachment, pipe, when you play it, you can look at the top 5 cards of your deck for an event and add it to your hand. One more pipe, and one more event to play.
Smoke and Think is a 0 cost spirit event that reduces the cost of the next played card by the number of pipes you control. Early game, this kickstart your board really nicely. Middle game, it will let you play Gandalf and Treebeard for free.
The goal of this deck is to play each turn one or two small questing allies and one or two events. And occasionally, a big guy.
Frodo Baggins of course is the tank of the team thanks to his ability. Gaffer Gamgee helps a lot with that as well and can be played each turn with a Resourceful on Pippin.
Attack power is the weakness of this deck early game. But when in place, Gandalf, Treebeard, Quickbeam and 3 Ithilien Lookout do the job.
You often end the game with less that 10 threat and an empty deck.
What to look for your first hand: Resourceful, a pipe, a threat reduction event.

Aug 01, 2020Thanks for the comment! I tried Leaf Brooch before Smoke and Think was spoiled. It is way smoother with Smoke and Think. About Will of the West, that could be a good idea. I often find myself recurring the 3 Curious Brandybuck and do nothing else. But I don't know what to take out from the deck to bring it in. Maybe one of those curious guys... I'll try that! Thanks for the idea. Thorongil is to expensive for the gain it could bring to the deck in my opinion. |
Aug 02, 2020I like Needful to Know over the expensive smoke rings and old toby. With Henamarth, scout ahead and risk some light, you also get some control over the encounter deck. Haven't played with smoke and think, though. |
Aug 02, 2020Strategy question: do you typically save the Smoke Rings for when you have lots of pipes out for bigger threat reduction, or do you play it soon after you draw it (assuming the Hobbit Pipes are ready) for the card draw? Also, have you thought about adding The Galadhrim's Greeting for even more threat control? On the whole, though, I like the deck. The simple joy of smoking a pipe allowing you to stand against Sauron is very Tolkienian to me, achieving victory not by strength of arms but by strength of spirit, where the littlest can oftentimes be the greatest. |
Aug 03, 2020what about elevenses? ringsdb.com atm you ahve only smoke rings and shirefolk that triggers the hobbit pipes. with elevenses it could be up to 9 events. |

The Galadhrim's Greeting could make an appearance, but it is expensive.
Thank you all for the feedbacks! |
Cool deck.
Leaf Brooch could be another sort of "resource generation" for the expensive events. One copy of Will of the West could be good since with this deck you draw and play a lot of cards.
Have you considered adding a copy of two of Thorongil to add the effects of Bilbo Baggins or Bilbo Baggins to your MotK Bilbo?
