Copterman 1331
DECK NAME - The Long Way 'Round
OVERVIEW - Here we have another great nightmare upgrade from the original quest. Gone are swingy cards such as Power of Mordor or Master's Malice. Also gone is the exploitable win condition thanks to Palace Remains. This is one of those quests that can take a while in solo as we are forced to play multiple rounds until the win condition is met. And we'll have to survive those rounds.
HEROES
- Gandalf - attach Gandalf's Staff, Steward of Gondor and Wizard Pipe; he will quest every round and is the engine that makes this deck hum
- Háma - he will always stay ready for combat; use his response early if necessary to insure we have attack cancellation
- Legolas - attach 2 weapons (Bow of the Galadhrim and Rivendell Blade preferred); he will stay ready for combat and for Hands Upon the Bow if needed
STRATEGY
- OPENING HAND - hard mulligan for Gandalf's Staff
- SETUP - add Uruk Lieutenant and Ancient Harbor to the staging area
- WIN CONDITION - So we have to have gained control of 5 Osgiliath locations (War Camp doesn't count) before we can travel to Palace Remains and win; this means we could be a long playthrough so buckle in; the deck is designed to keep us alive and well as we slowly collect the needed locations
- ENEMIES - the deck is designed to deal with each enemy as it is revealed; we will attempt to cancel every enemy attack (shadows are really bad) and subsequently destroy using Legolas and Hama
- SETTING UP OUR ENGINE - we want to get to Gandalf's Staff out asap and use it to draw cards until we get Wizard Pipe and Steward of Gondor out
- WEAPONS - it may seem like there are too many weapons in this deck, but Legolas needs them in order to do the necessary damage
- ROUND 1 - a perfect first round would be 1) play Gandalf's Staff and Rivendell Blade, 2) quest w Gandalf, 3) engage enemy, 4) exhaust Gandalf's Staff to give Legolas a resource, 5) play Feint to cancel enemy attack, 6) attack enemy with Legolas and Hama to destroy enemy, 7) use Hama's response to reclaim the discarded Feint, and 8) use Foe-hammer to draw 3 cards
- GANDALF'S ABILITY - this is how we are able to play off-sphere cards; plan ahead and use Wizard Pipe to keep things rolling
CARDS
- Beorn - included to help with Archery damage; also he can go back to the deck using his action (which is a sort of healing) if the deck is empty which can help play an off-sphere event using Wizard Pipe
- OUTLANDS ALLIES - this is where we will get our much needed for questing
- Book of Eldacar - it will cost 2 resources unless you use Gandalf's ability to play it off the top of the deck; just a way to insure we can use Feint more often
- Hands Upon the Bow - be sure to save some for Haradrim Elite; sadly doesn't work against Southron Commander
- Power of Orthanc - for Relentless Attack
- The Seeing-stone - helps increase odds of having attack cancellation as we can use to fish out The Wizards's Voice; it's best not to play The Wizards's Voice if possible; just reuse Feint; also this card shuffles the player deck which can result in a better face up card
- The White Council - this card is huge for this deck! can ready Gandalf if needed, can move a resource where needed to play cards in certain situations, but mainly useful for grabbing a needed event out of discard (thereby resetting your deck and changing the face up card
- Will of the West - one copy seems to be enough but be careful as there is a location that forces you to discard all of your events in hand
