This is a multiplayer variant of the Last Ride of Theoden, meant to be paired with an Elfhelm/Fastred/Éomer deck in general play.
This deck is meant to provide strong questing and combat power out of the gate. Éowyn, Théoden, and Merry together quest for 10 from turn 1, and Éowyn's attacking ability can take out an early enemy to help clear the board.
Over the long term, this deck is focused around boosting the power of its heroes, especially Théoden. With all of the pieces in play, the heroes alone quest for 17 , all with readying effects allowing them to participate in combat.
The core interaction is Théoden/Snowmane/Golden Shield/Armored Destrier (played from the other deck). With this combination in play, Théoden quests for 3, defends on either side of the board for 5, and attacks for 4, all in a single round, and can also discard a shadow card from an enemy. With Song of Travel attached and Rally the West in the victory display, this is boosted to 5 , 7 , and 4 .
Early on, Théoden is the primary attacker, supported by Westfold Outriders. In the later game, Éowyn is built up to be the deck's primary attacker against large enemies. With Herugrim, she attacks for 6 base, and can boost it to 10 with Windfola, a Song of Travel, and Rally the West, due to Elfhelm's ability; if she saves her 1-shot ability until the combo has been put together, she can attack for 19 for a single attack. Éowyn is a priority target for either Unexpected Courage or a Steed of the Mark from the other deck, to ensure that she can make use of her attack.
Since the most notable combat weakness of this deck is that the most effective attacks and defenses can only be used once per round, Merry helps keep threat low enough to selectively engage enemies. With Hobbit Pony, he can hold back from the quest and then commit with 3 if no viable target for his ability shows up; with Unexpected Courage, he can reduce threat for an enemy and quest at the same time. Merry is also a target for a Dagger of Westernesse. Before Hobbit Pony comes out, he will already be ready for combat if no useful enemy shows up; after he gets his mount, you can choose whether his 3 is more useful than 3 . The dagger is also the simplest and most effective way to trigger Foe-hammer for additional card draw, and is another reason to target Merry with a copy of Unexpected Courage.
Grimbold and Guthlaf provide long-term quest support, while the Escorts from Edoras and the discard ability on Westfold Outrider can significantly boost performance on a critical round. Westfold Horse-breeders also contribute to the overall available, although their main purpose is to fish out the extremely important Mount attachments. Of particular note among the allies is Déorwine, who is a good backup defender with no setup at all; with Raiment of War attached, he becomes able to defend against all but the strongest attacks. The paired deck provides resources to trigger his shadow cancellation ability.
Firefoot is to be played across the table onto Eomer, while Raiment of War is for Fastred and Déorwine. In addition to a copy for Merry, a Dagger of Westernesse helps boost Éomer's staging area attack if Firefoot or Gúthwinë haven't shown up yet. The remainder of the cards are self-explanatory.
Mulligan for Snowmane and Golden Shield, although Gather Information and one piece is fine, and a Westfold Horse-breeder is a decent substitute for the mount.
The sideboard mostly includes allies to swap out for different quest focuses - Horseback Archers for Battle questing, high- allies for Siege quests, and location control if more is needed. Condition removal is also provided, along with an extra copy of Herugrim for quests that include large numbers of high-hit point enemies.
