GamgeeGardens 9
Introduction
In the light of the recent and controversial FAQ 1.9, the deck idea I previously had prepared for mono-spirit was forced back to the drawing board. The changes, for those who haven't seen it, limited the abilities of various powerful player cards, including Boromir's readying to once a phase and We Are Not Idle to only dwarf heroes. Caldara, a card that was once considered weak by some, is now only allowed to discard herself once per game; not because of some broken combo but only because she is too strong. The tables have truly turned!
Derived from Caldara's Sacrifice
Therefore, this deck pays homage to a Caldara deck created before she gained (and lost some of) this power: Caldrara's Sacrifice by @Beorn. I added some newer cards to the original but have preserved the flavour by using the same heroes and not resurrecting Caldara. I have deliberately omitted Prince Imrahil and Sword-thain in favour of supporting two heroes. The sideboard includes them in case you feel differently.
@Beorn's original concept was to discard cards from the deck using the Zigil Miner - Imladris Stargazer combo, with the aim of dumping some powerful allies into the discard pile and generating resources to pay for the rest of the cards. Caldara's ability is saved for a rainy day: the mid-late game combat phase where everything gets out of hand.
My Changes
I tried to use the Miners and Stargazers but half the time, the combo simply didn't get set up early enough. When it did, I saw that this kind of deck is really too inconsistent in cost to rake in enough cash. Instead, the Noldor synergy is used, centred around To the Sea, to the Sea!. Sadly, ally Glorfindel is off the cards but Lindir works a treat! With 12 Noldor allies, Sam and Emery getting cost reduction, this deck gets bodies on the line cheaply, freeing up resources for the more expensive features of the deck.
Of course, all this needs card draw so an early copy of Elven-light will fuel the deck. If you need more, grab some Ancient Mathom from the side. After our valiant hero discards, Strider and Vanish from Sight will let you console your loss. Finally, Gandalf is for times when a more aggressive approach is called for.
There are far more powerful, thematic and resilient decks out there using the once per game hero discard but I hope that you agree with me that...
...Caldara's Legacy continues.
