This is the official decks released for Defenders of Gondor - Starter Deck released 2022-03-11.

"By our valour the wild folk of the East are still restrained and the terror of Morgul kept at bay..." - Boromir, The Fellowship of the Ring

Playing the Gondorians Starter Deck

The Kingdom of Gondor has been beset by enemies for centuries. As the defenders of the Free Peoples' easter flank, the Gondorians have thrived with their backs up against the wall.

One of the major driving forces of this deck is a group of cards that work optimally when your thread is 40 or higher, such as Angbor the Fearless and Soldier of Gondor. You may want to let your threat increase a bit faster than normal, to activate these powerful abilities.

However, take care when doing so that you don't let your threat get too high - you'll be walking a fine line between activating your card abilities and losing the game. A few thread reduction effects, like Pillars of the Kings and Gandalf, are available in the deck to assist in managing this aspect of the game.

Another intriguing feature of this deck is the ability that you unlock by attacking the Visionary Leadership card to Boromir. both of these cards will work best when you have extra resources in Boromir's resource pool.

This means you'll have to pay extra attention to your spending, and sometimes hold back on playing a card to preserve the extra tokens in your resource pools. There are a number of other cards in the deck, such as Steward of Gondor and Squire of the Citadel, that can be used to manage your resources and ensure that these abilities are active at critical times.

Thanks for posting this! Are you still planning on adding the text from the pamphlet? It would be great if you would.

Also, which of these decks is the strongest/best? Thanks.

Yeah, I’m planning to add it @Turgon. Family has gastro and all five of us are down and out!

I'm loving your thematic starter decks that are including cards from all the APs. Are you planning on making starter decks for all archetypes?

Mar 05, 2022 Turgon 557

@Kylethejew These are the official FFG starter decks, releasing next month.

Mar 06, 2022 pandom 4633

Yeah @Kylethejew - these release on March 11. You can buy them and get these cards in a convenient format.

I was happy to get these as someone with everything as it fleshes my staple cards out and provides me with something for friends to pick up and play.

Having glanced at all the deck lists, this one really seems to give the most bang for the buck(or dollarydoo) when adding to the revised core

Mar 07, 2022 gorky 1

But what are the scenarios/quests in those starter decks?

Mar 07, 2022 Turgon 557

@gorky They don't include quests; they're only player cards. That being said, you're getting a lot more player cards than an adventure pack.

would definetly (at least) put in 3 Steward of Gondor a 3.rd Gandalf and 3.rd Sneak Attack.

seemed not well designed and/or tested these new "starter decks", even if you want to stay very thematic, those at least changes i mention are very obvious and does not hurt theme.

and if you want to say, that because of the basic 8 gandalfs every deck should have 2, i say a 3. gandalf in the deck with Sneak Attack is far more worth, than a 2. in a deck without.

@doomguard These look fine for what they're intended to do. These decks exist to double the card pool for new or returning players, augment the core set with interesting deck building options, and have enough strength to get through Mirkwood Paths and The Dark of Mirkwood. I get SA/Gandalf is iconic (so much that they remade it for Marvel Champions), but it is counter theme for the product. I understand what you mean, but I think if you look at the lists, most of what they may lack can be handled in the revised core.

weird constallation, use 2 old basesets and the new starter, (because the re core is older than the new starters) but o.k. then some of the imo not optimal decisions are understandable.

I think we may get design information potentially through interviews and webseries once we reach the official release dates.

I agree with with @MarvelsTold that the design ethos definitely will be influenced by Core+ Starter Decks.

I bought this one on a sale, but it definitely seems to be missing more really good cards for this archetype than the Elves or Dwarves deck. Like why wasn't Knight of Minas Tirith included? Seems like an obvious tactics attacker that would fit so well. Or Spear of the Citadel for Beregond to go with the shield.

Feb 18, 2023 MarvelsTold 4

@The1Ringer Knights of Minas Tirith needs 3 tactics heroes. The card isn't good for the starter and it doesn't synergize with the core set in the way the seemingly out of place tactics cards from the elf deck do. The spear could have been nice, but there are other great cards that probably won't see reprinted cycles that got left out of other decks. EG: Imladris Stargazer and Light of Valinor

Feb 19, 2023 The1Ringer 49

@MarvelsTold It needs three tactics heroes to gain the bonus ability, but it's still three attack for three resources, which is a better deal than any other attacker in this deck. And if you got Hirgon from the Rohan starter (which imo should have been in this deck instead of Rohan) you would have three Gondor tactics heroes already.

Mar 18, 2024 Cleggy 1

Hi Pandom or anyone else who can help? Can you advise when Heir of Mardil can/ought to be used. I'm sure there is a combination here in this deck that I might be missing but I can't see where I can use it. Thanks

Mar 18, 2024 NERD 808

I think it is supposed to be used with Squire of the Citadel and Steward of Gondor. It is still not the best card for this type of deck though.
