proudfeat 39

proudfeat has a newer deck inspired by this one: Get Off My Land

Designed for multiplayer play, Beorn tanks and deals damage from the start, with any health loss mitigated somewhat by Thurindir snatching Keep Watch during setup. This allows Damrod and Thurindir to focus on throttling the stream of monsters via traps with a sprinkling of encounter deck manipulation with Firyal and Interrogation. By the time Beorn is needing to be resurrected I would likely have drawn The Houses of Healing and hopefully at least two healers thanks to Damrod's deck cycling abilities. Elf-stone is there to get Firyal or Anborn out in particular due to their high cost but could also help other players get some expensive allies out.

Drawing for The Long Defeat and Elf-stone are the priorities to get the former onto a quest and the latter onto a location. Of course, the sooner Honour Guard gets out there, the better. One potential way to improve this deck would be to get some more events to make good use Beorn's resources other than paying for Ranger of Cardolan but ultimately Beorn's appeal to me is that he doesn't require much infrastructure around him to do great things.

For a typical adventure Eryn Galen Settler, Woodmen's Path, and to a lesser extent Secret Paths should be able to keep threat from locations at a manageable level. For location-heavy adventures it would likely become necessary to replace Keep Watch with Explore Secret Ways and replace Ranger of Cardolan with Guardian of Ithilien to cheaply use their action for Distant Stars.

Get off my lawn! Nice deck; even better title. To avoid the pile-up of resources on Beorn you could have Bifur sub for Thurindir and add 2 more copies of Keep Watch.

I realize this is going back-and-forth, but why did you swap Landroval for The Houses of Healing while at the same time debating how to find a use for Beorns resources? I realize you can get a couple of points in cost-reduction with the healers, but that's sorta negated if Beorns resources goes to waste, and you loose the stats that the bird could have added.

On the more productive side I'd pitch Thalion as a suggestion. At least 1 copy. He can feed off Beorn's resources (or the others in a pinch, or perhaps even the Elf-stone) and he has nice synergy with Thurindir. He's good value for money even with just 1 side-quest.

That's a great point. One reason The Houses of Healing was appealing to me was that I could play it any time; of course, it'd be nice if Landroval was out before Beorn (or someone else) died but I interpreted Landroval's text as having a window of opportunity (in this case, immediately following the death of a hero) to use his ability. The Houses of Healing does not seem to have that narrow window.

In addition to that (possibly incorrect) interpretation of the text, I essentially replaced Landroval + Lore of Imladris with Ioreth + The Houses of Healing to have the same resurrection mechanic while also adding in cheaper healing. To me, 1 resource for 3 health slightly edges out 2 resources for all health given the flexibility of the former.

Thalion would be a fantastic addition. In order to keep the deck at 50, I wonder if I either replaced Anborn with Thalion or did a 1/1 split. The only time I would use his ability would be on the Entangling Nets trap since the Forest Snare and Ranger Spikes typically stick around. Would recycling Entangling Nets be worth keeping Anborn around at that point or should I replace him with Thalion?

Thanks for the reply!

True, the window of opportunity is more narrow. Landroval has to be out when he dies, but I would kinda presume that if Beorn dies and you havn't got your resurrection-card the deck will be severly crippled (possibly for to long), regardsless of which card you go for.

Therefore I would think it better to add more card-draw if needed (perhaps Peace, and Thought), until you consistently have your resurection-card when he dies. Regardless of which card you go for.

I agree with you for Ioreth over Lore of Imladris, but that doesn't require dropping the bird.

Would you choose Peace, and Thought over Mithlond Sea-watcher? 1 resource for 2 cards, plus Damrod's card draw on trap attachment should be good enough to cycle my deck, correct? Deck cycling cards would be a great addition either way in order to get other cards out that allow me to be effective in my role. What would you recommend cutting to keep it at 50?

Honestly, I wouldn't presume to know for sure without play-testing. That's why I said to add draw : "if needed".

My general impression is that you need a bit more besides Damrod's ability, and with a hero like Damrod (with weak stats, and an ability that doesn't require exausting) I'm partial to Peace, and Thought. Exausting Thurindir with his 3 is slightly more of a cost, but I think the increased draw is worth it.

I'd probably drop Forest Patrol, as adding more damage to an enemy is likely pointless if it has a Forest Snare or Ranger Spikes. It will mostly only work on Entangling Nets, and even there it is likely overkill on an enemy that wouldn't do much anyway, or if not it will probably be an enemy that is to tough to kill with the Forest Patrol

Interesting deck! I've also tried to build a few iterations around Damrod, to be honest I haven't been all that successful. One card which may be helpful to you, and was extremely powerful for me was Followed. Always helped big time with questing, which was always my downfall on scenarios that pump out encounter cards.

I ran some tests (n = 50) using the draw deck simulation on a later iteration of this deck with 2 Landroval and 2 The Houses of Healing. If I got The Houses of Healing or Landroval within the first 6 cards, or the subsequent 6 cards (drawing 5 from "playing" Peace, and Thought if I drew it), I counted it as a success. I had 38 successes and 12 failures for a 76% chance of drawing a Beorn-saving card.

This simulation represents the mulligan (a new 6 cards) plus 6 card draws (representing some combination of new rounds and Damrod's ability). The actual percentage is likely slightly higher since I am not sure how to incorporate the first hand + mulligan/deck shuffle into account using the card draw simulation.

My conclusion is to include both Houses + Landroval as well as Peace, and Thought which would be valuable even if I already drew a Beorn-resurrecting card.

Dbldbl, I included Followed in the next iteration; that's a great suggestion because it fits right in with my goals for the deck, works great with Forest Snare, and gives me a use for Beorn's resource. Thanks!

No problem! I found it to be very useful. My version had a few more traps so this might not work, but I also really like Emyn Arnen Ranger, especially once you get someone in a Forest Snare or Entangling Nets. Just leave them there to give him a target. I usually got 3 willpower out of him for 2 cost.
