RedSpiderr 1809

This deck represents the forces dispatched by the Steward of Gondor to destroy the threat posed by the Dreadnaught. Boromir, Captain-General of Gondor, takes with him the Captain of the Tower Guard as his personal bodyguard, and Mablung, one of the chief Rangers out of Ithilien. Their task is not easy or simple, but aid is coming. Elven ships were promised from Lindon in times of desperation, and these are indeed desperate times. If Umbar controls the Bay of Belfalas, then no coastland or river leading to the Great Sea will be safe from their raids. If the Dreadnaught is destroyed, a clear message will be sent that Gondor controls the seas to her south, and will let none pass with impunity.

The task of this deck is two-fold: prevent the ships from being damaged, and dominate the combat phase. The biggest liability for any deck playing Hunt for the Dreadnaught is the destruction of your ship, which will cause you to lose the game. Your ships are immune to player card effects, so healing them with Warden of Healing or increasing their with Arwen Undómiel is out of the question. However, you can cancel the damage that is dealt to your ships, and so this is where we see the first tentpole of this deck. Use Honour Guard almost exclusively for your ships. If they die, you die. We have a copy of Vigilant Guard to syphon damage onto Beregond, who should be given a Raven-winged Helm as soon as possible to them cancel that damage. The other Raven-winged Helms go on Boromir and Mablung once they have Sentinel from the Tireless Thoroughbred so they can soak up Archery damage that might otherwise have been put on your ships out of necessity. Getting in as many of your cheap allies as possible is needed to discard various Condition attachments that harm your ship, either by limiting their action advantage or by giving them extra damage each time they exhaust. Soldier of Dol Amroth is great for this action economy cost curve, becoming a 1-cost ally providing you play it preceding another card, which should be straight-forward enough in this deck. Honour Guard, Gondorian Spearman and Defender of Rammas all only cost 2 resources as well, so you can get out 2 reliable allies for a single turn's worth of resources.

This action economy will also serve you in the combat phase. The way this deck kills enemies is 'Death by One Thousand Cuts'. With the Pride of Lebennin as this deck's ship, Boromir, Beregond and Mablung all start the game with 3, 5 and 3 respectively. Beregond can easily get up to 7 with Gondorian Shield, which is free for him, and with Sentinel he defends across the board. Spear of the Citadel, also free, makes sure that each enemy he defends is pinged for a point of damage. Boromir can do this for multiple attacks, especially with a Tireless Thoroughbred, and even the Defender of Cair Andros can weigh in, albeit only after you reach 40 threat. Whittle down the enemies with Knight of Minas Tirith and massed Soldier of Dol Amroth, and when they are down to their final hit point have the Gondorian Spearman finish them off. Golden Belt works best on Mablung, who with a Gondorian Shield, Warrior Sword and Spear of the Citadel can weigh however best suits him, and on Boromir, who should get the Tireless Thoroughbred instead of the Gondorian Shield so he can attack and defend across the table. Give him Captain of Gondor as well so you can make the most out of his boosted and . Use The Hammer-stroke as a panic-button if the other deck is getting overwhelmed, and Thicket of Spears if you are. Stand Together could be good if you have the action economy to hit an enemy with 2 or 3 sources of direct damage and finish them off, but it is certainly nothing to be relied on. Threat management is scarce here, with only Secret Vigil to speak of, so use Boromir's extra actions sparingly, and never without good cause.

The Lord Denethor has heard of the growing Corsair threat, and their destruction is a mission he would trust to no-one lesser than his firstborn son. Boromir takes his ship from Harlond and begins his voyage down the Anduin. They are making for Dol Amroth, where they plan to rally the Fleet of the Swan and hunt down the Corsair's flagship and send it to the depths of the Great Sea.
