This deck is part of a set of 16 decks, for all details check out the project here: 16 Decks Were Given to the Race of Men.

Rating:

  • Preferred Player Count: 2 - 4
  • Complexity: Medium
  • Time Intensity: Medium
  • Focus: Balanced

Synopsis:

This Bond of Friendship deck can do a bit of anything and is mainly built around side quests. Due to having a lot of resources every round, you have the means to get some of the best allies in the game into play rather quickly, something The Storm Comes helps you further with. In the early rounds, clearing some useful side quests is your main priority. Later on, you will look to adapt to whatever your group requires with your ally and side quest pool.

How it's played:

Usually one tries to play Peace, and Thought (and if possible, Tighten Our Belts) at the end of the first round. So as a result of this, any opening hand that either has this powerful drawing effect or can speed up your start with is worth keeping. The setup action for Thurindir usually searches for Gather Information (to grab Peace, and Thought or Tighten Our Belts) if you missed it in your opening hand, but others can be chosen if it suits the scenario. The second side quest you look to complete is in most cases The Storm Comes. This card will help you tremendously to bring out allies onto the table, since you are no longer required to wait multiple rounds to accumulate the resources. Most of your heroes are usually sent to the quest, only Denethor is held back for defense. Another trump of this deck is The Free Peoples. You start the game with 7 of the 9 required traits, so it shouldn't be too difficult to get this card played.

Strengths: Well-roundedness, Adaptability to various challenges

Weaknesses: Quests that punish the use of side quests

Changes:

The change between Théodred and Denethor has quite some implications. Where you initially had a lot of resource smoothing through Théodred, you now start the game with 2 extra resources but no longer have the ability to smoothen your resources. This is most notable for spirit and tactics and thus increased the importance of The Storm Comes. Denethor is now your primary defender. Finally we upgraded the number of cards that benefit everyone eg, Secret Vigil, The Long Defeat, Deep Knowledge, Second Breakfast, The Free Peoples, The White Council and all side quests.

In a world where Steward of Gondor is in other decks, could In Service of the Steward help with allowing Denethor to resource-smooth if you can't clear The Storm Comes for some reason?

We opted to forfeit on the resource smoothing from Denethor. He can still be used to help other players but there are no means included for the deck itself.

We thought this was justified since there are quite a number of smoothing effects included to help you play those few 3/4 costs: Envoy of Pelargir, Halfast Gamgee, Thalion (hero), Ranger Provisions, Tighten Our Belts, The White Council and the sidequests: Send for Aid, The Storm Comes incl. fetch The Road Goes Ever On.

Also Gather Information into Peace, and Thought gives quite a card advantage. So your very likely to find some of these smoothing cards when needed.

Sounds good. Just goes to show how important good card draw is. Many problems with a deck can be mitigated with good card draw.
