Smoky Peat 24

Pretty simple and effective Questing/Support deck that has solid solo ability, made from a mesh of Core, Defenders of Gondor, and Riders of Rohan starter cards.

I built this deck initially to complement my other deck "The Oath of Eorl Fulfilled" (Tactics/Spirit) who's primarily focused on defending against multiple enemies (enough for both decks), and clearing out enemies quickly.
*Note there is another awesome deck by the same name made by another user here without my knowing when I first named it.

Strengths:

  • Solid consistent questing power
  • Plenty of affordable traps to keep enemies suppressed
  • Consistent healing and card draw potential
  • Solid encounter deck counters

Weakness:

  • Lower combat potential (until Eowyn is set up; relies on companion deck for consistent defense)
  • Can be a slow start if your resources do not align with your cards.

Guide: Éowyn is your main quester with a solid 4 Willpower to start, boosted to 6 with Celebrían's Stone. Eowyn then becomes an absolute powerhouse, able to quest for 6 (or more if you discard), re-ready with either Snowmane or Unexpected Courage (whichever comes first), and then hitting for 7 (again, more if you discard) with Herugrim.

In terms of questing potential, this deck alone can quest 11 per turn consistently (Eowyn for 6+, Damrod for 2, Angbor for 2, Northern Tracker for 1) If more is needed, then Gleowine, Soldiers of Gondor, and Daughters of the Nimrodel can also be quested in lieu of their abilties.

Damrod is the reason you have 10 traps in your deck, all costing you 1 or 2 resources. You will be flooding the field with traps and drawing cards constantly when they attach. Anborn is expensive, but by late game he should be affordable and can then help you recycle these handy traps.

Faramir's ability is a neat bonus that allows you to ready any of your handy allies for whatever your need may be. Need more healing? Daughter of the Nimrodel. Need more cards? Gléowine. Need more resources of a different sphere? Errand-rider. Need more traps? Anborn. Need someone you quested to be a meat shield? Soldier of Gondor or Angbor the Fearless. He will also be a 3 or 4 attacker with Valiant Sword in the late game.

In the event of a crummy draw and your resources aren't aligning well, having 3 of each Errand-rider and Steward of Gondor can fix that. Even drawing one of these will help alleviate the sluggishness and move things along to get your drawing power up with Damrod and Lórien's Wealth.

A Test of Will and Hasty Stroke will ensure you've got enough safeguards against nasty encounter cards.

This looks like a fun deck! I'd probably drop one of the copies of either Ithilien Pit or Poisoned Stakes to add another copy of Ranger Spikes.

Thanks for the tip!

We started with 3 copies of Ranger Spikes but didn't find it overly useful with how quickly we were able to clear out enemies. Ithilien Pit on the other hand would allow me to send Eomer over to clear out her enemies if she didn't have Herugrim on Eowyn online yet.

That's my rationale anyway, not sure if I'm just using Ranger Spikes wrong.

Ranger Spikes basically means that you will never need to kill the enemy, making it better than Ambush. In addition, it helps with questing unlike Ithilien Pit.

That makes sense! Unfortunately we are playing through the Two Towers Saga Expansion and almost every enemy has 3+ threat, so we haven't seen the full benefit of the -2 from Ranger Spikes

Even so, unless a stage effect or a card effect (like archery) forces you to kill the enemy, the extra questing is rarely an issue. After all, if you do not have to kill the next enemy from the encounter deck, you can use those characters to quest.

I had great luck with Ranger Spikes when it hits on 2 threat enemies. I just leave them in the Staging area and don't have to deal with them again, even after reshuffling the encounter deck. Imo it's:

1 Forest Snare (I play a lot of Dúnedain, so auto-included)

2 Poisoned Stakes (high threat enemies take care of themselves)

3 Ranger Spikes (no worrying about questing or engaging)

4 Ithilien Pit/Entangling Nets (especially good together when fighting)

5 Ambush (pretty meh if you ask me, but maybe someone else can enlighten me on it)

Obviously, Forest Snare can be very effective but you still have to take one attack, unless you use Reforged. Thus, I would rather have Outmatched and spend the saved resources on shadow cancelation. Armored Destrier does effectively the same thing as Forest Snare but is cheaper. While Poisoned Stakes is decent in low-threat decks such as hobbit ones, the damage is slow. It is really only effective in certain scenarios. I prefer Ranger Spikes over Poisoned Stakes. Ranger Spikes helps with questing immediately while Poisoned Stakes leaves the enemy in the staging area for a few turns. Admittedly the staked enemy will never die. However, this is rarely an issue. Entangling Nets is great with Damrod and good for Dunedain or Beorn decks. Like Ranger Spikes, Ithilien Pit is good in low-threat decks. Because of its low cost, I would argue that it is often better than poisoned stakes. Finally, Ambush is playable in any Damrod deck but is only really effective in janky loops with Anborn. So my final ranking would be the following.

  1. Stakes
  2. Nets
  3. Pit
  4. Snare
  5. Stakes
  6. Ambush

I would love to hear some more debate on the topic.

Love the discussion, and I certainly appreciate all the points you guys bring up. @NERD @Wittebaard

Bear in mind that this deck was meant to complement my other deck with Éomer as the main striker. With Firefoot and Rohan Warhorse, we've usually cleared out enemies faster than they appear (there are often even spare attackers not needed to be used in the combat phase). For that reason, we didn't really see why we wouldn't clear off the board, given the spare unexhausted attackers (not to mention Eomer's pitiful Willpower score... like, would I rather make two attacks for 7 each, or quest for 1? Hmm....)

However, in the event where Eomer is online, but Beregond still doesn't have his Unexpected Courage, then this deck would sometimes have to engage and soak up an attack, making it so Eomer can't attack it.

Now, I realize Ranger Spikes would solve that exact problem, so I am considering bringing back a third copy. But in this case, Ithilien Pit would also solve that problem. As you say, Forest Snare is expensive and still requires someone to take one hit, and given that the big boys where we need it most (Oliphants, Black Riders, etc) can't have attachments... I wonder if it is even worth it for the stall tactic... Poisoned Stakes on the other hand has worked great, but has also been completely useless against uruk hai with Toughness...

My rationale for Ambush is that it's basically a free card draw for Damrod, and Hasty Stroke, since Eomer can clear them out before they get a chance to move.

All this to say, my final ranking in this fellowship and going through the Fellowship and Two Towers Saga would be:

  1. Spikes
  2. Pit
  3. Ambush
  4. Nets
  5. Stakes
  6. Snares

I have never tried Entangling nets because I don't own that care, but if I did, I would rank it as such.
