Discard Pile

A number of decks have been published recently pairing Harad with other traits via The Last Alliance to take the most advantage of this limited but powerful trait. We've seen @doomguard's Harad+Eagles and @Kaspatou's Harad+Rohan, but here I present Harad+Beornings!
This deck doubles down on two traits with high-cost/high-reward allies, while taking advantage of their shared interest in discard pile bouncing (Kahliel's Headdress, Birna, and Beorning Skin-changer) and also putting lots of cards into the discard pile (Beorning Pony, A Very Good Tale, Daeron's Runes).
The Biggest Bear can handle combat the first few rounds on is own, though Kahliel and Osbera can often help even after questing with damage reduction and readying.
In general, you'll be torn about what to use the contract for each round, which makes the deck fun to pilot. Do you target either of Osbera's sides for a questing boost or to keep a hero alive? Do you target Kahliel to help play a Beorning or ready Giant Bear yet again? Do you target a Beorning Skin-changer to grab Jubayr out of the discard, or Kahliel's Headdress for a big questing boost and to cycle a Beorning Skin-changer back into your deck?
There are other assorted combos, too, of course. One of my favorites is Sneak Attack Giant Bear during combat, defend, use its ability to ready, then use it with another ally for A Very Good Tale to grab someone else powerful.
Note: A strong case could be made for Grimbeorn the Old over Beorn to let the smaller bear take advantage of Kahliel's readying AND let you play ally Beorn.

May 02, 2024Thanks, I did put Keen as Lances in the sideboard, as it's a valid option. Might experiment with something like: +3x Keen as Lances and +2x Deep Knowledge, -1x Rod of the Steward, -1x Song of Hope, -1x Favor of the Valar, -1x Kahliel's Headdress, -1x Captain's Wisdom. |
May 02, 2024sounds solid. keeping Favor of the Valar feels so save, but perhaps it is better let it go as u do ^^ what about Beorn's Welcome? it helps paying Birnas ability or that of Osbera if using Grimbeorn the Old i would definetly include it. Grimbeorn the Old has another benefit, you can give him the Steward of Gondor so you can use the contract-action for a different task than paying with Kahliel for expensive beornings. |
May 02, 2024It's a nice deck, there are good synergies beetween Beornings & Harads :) |
May 02, 2024I have to say that it was a LOT of fun to take this deck against Conflict at the Carrock and simply aggro all 4 trolls at once like they were no big deal. |

May 02, 2024Great deck! You made Harad actually work. However, the trait as a whole needs some help. Personally, I would love to see a Harad hero that has a response to pay two or three resources to put a discarded Harad ally into play. Maybe there could also be a boost for having a unique Harad character of each color. Finally, I would love to see some Harad-specific support for having a few strong allies, something like the character restriction on Strider. |
i would consider adding Beorn, then you could loose the hero and add the ally. playing carn dum or equal nasty battles that could make a difference. using Beorning Skin-changer to get the precious harad-uniques into play is good idea, but overall it seems to me it lacks a bit of carddraw. would think about Keen as Lances and perhaps Deep Knowledge (only if adding keen or other threadreducing options)
overall very solid and i think in this case harad as alliance-tribe is better than e.g. dwarfes (because of the additional option to get the uniques into play).
