Codus 38

The idea for this deck is heavily inspired by http://ringsdb.com/decklist/view/2884/roheryn-s-fire-1.0

Seastan posted his version of a Roheryn deck with a comment that it can sometimes be a little slow on questing so I had thoughts on how to tweak it.

Leadership Aragorn is used in place of Loragorn, and Arwen in place of Leadership Denethor. This means you don't have quite the same explosive start but it is still pretty fast. All three heroes can quest for 7 willpower on turn 1 and once you get one or two of the spirit allies out, questing is well covered.

Errand-riders are slotted in to compensate for Denethor's in-game ability, and together with Envoy of Pelargir provide resource smoothing to make sure you're never short of options. Arwens discard ability also keeps your resource engine ticking along nicely.

You are looking for Steward of Gondor in your opening hand to be played on Aragorn. You can always pay for this with either Arwen's ability or if you have an Envoy of Pelargir in hand. After that, you need Roheryn and Gondorian Fire on Aragorn - similar to Seastan's deck, once these are in place you are pretty much set.

Errand-riders should be played as early as possible so that you never have a round where you can't play your best card.

Elrond's Counsel and Galadriel's Handmaiden keeps your threat low, often ending the game below your starting threat. Low threat means you have more control over optional engagements so Roheryn can be triggered every time. Steed of Imladris has been included to get a benefit from any cards in hand that you can't play.

In testing so far, the deck performs very consistently - the weakest points of the deck are that it can sometimes take 3-4 rounds before Aragorn is able to one-shot every enemy and if you get engaged by a low threat enemy in turn 1 or 2, you need to soak some attacks. You have plenty of chump blocking options, or you can just take the attacks and heal up later with Wardens.

I put Tale of Tinúviel in the sideboard as an option to boost Aragorns attack in the early game. This would be even better with Common Cause, but the chance of having both cards in hand while you have Erestor as a hero is too slim.

I like your hero lineup very much. Being able to use Arwen on any hero is pretty awesome. I am definitely going to try this out.

Some comments:

  1. I find Elven-light to be an overkill in Erestor decks. It can also be dangerous, as you cen send a resource from Aren to draw into an Ethir Swordsman that you can no longer play.
  2. Westfold Horse-breeder can help you find your key card faster.
  3. In the absence of A Test of Will your main questers are pretty squishy. I'd consider including Anfalas Herdsman.
  4. I'm thinking about cards that could help out in the early game while Aragorn is still weak - Cram with Tale of Tinúviel could work well. You could also try experimenting with Entangling Nets as it will help your defense in the case that Aragorn can't make the kill.

Thanks, and thank you for the original inspiration for the deck! It's a ton of fun to play.

I can see your point with Elven-light, but it's not usually a problem to get 3 resources on Arwen Undómiel once you have a couple of Errand-rider's out. Until then they can sit happily in the discard pile.

I started with Celebrían's Stone in the deck so Aragorn could pitch in with spirit allies, and also with questing. Once he gets more than 5 resources on him he can be questing every turn for 4 willpower, and ready up with the ability to attack for high value. The problem I found with this was that sometimes pulled you in the wrong direction when you got one in hand in the early game.

I like the idea of all the cards you suggest above. Galadhrim Weaver hasn't really been triggering in the most useful way and I would easily replace them.

Cram and Tale of Tinúviel would be perfect for the early game.

Actually the more I think about it, the more I realise what a perfect card Cram is for this deck. It gets around the problem of not having it in hand at the same time as Tale of Tinúviel and gives Aragorn a boost when it is most needed.

Once he gets 5 resources on him, you don't often need more than that and I've found that the response of Sword of Númenor can be a little win-more. Also, using Westfold Horse-breeder means you could probably safely take Song of Battle out of the deck. Great comments!

This deck is very fun to play, and also it feels very consistent when you use it. Nice job here !

I think that Steed of the North would be a good addition to the deck. You can quest with Aragorn (paying 1 resource), engage an enemy, hit him, and then ready Aragorn so it can hit another enemy (or defend if it is necessary), or just quest without having to pay.

Given the problem that Erestor could be in some quests, I'd add two copies of will of the west (at least in the sideboard).

Also, I'm testing this deck in a couple of quests of different styles, and I found that for some quests (in my case, Deadmen's dike), it could also work very well with Galdor of the Havens instead of Erestor.

It isn't as "explosive" as it is with Erestor, but you can use tests of will and some other "circumstantial" cards.

Thanks wehehe,

I like Steed of the North as a card but its restricted keyword would probably put me off in this deck, as competition for Sword of Númenor. That said, I can definitely see the need for swapping out certain cards for specific quests. For example, this deck does NOT fare well against The Three Trials. The guardians automatically engage you at the beginning of each turn so you can't even use tricks such as A Light in the Dark. For this quest I'd look to put in a Gondorian Shield or similar but again you will need some consistent form of readying. It's still a good, solid consistent deck for most quests though - I handily beat the first quest in Sands of Harad with it yesterday.

I made a few tweaks but want to test them more before posting an update.
