Adaepholn 149

Adaepholn has a newer deck inspired by this one: The Might of Rohan, Gondor and the Shire (Theoden Tactics)

Intro and Concept

A mono-tactics Théoden deck, designed to be played in a mono-tactics fellowship. I don't think this deck would work very well solo.

I began with Théoden and then picked the other 5 heroes I wanted. I chose Merry as he is a reasonable quester with Théoden and has a great threat cost. I did toy with the idea of using Beregond in this deck, but decided to use Boromir to balance out starting threat. I have been impressed with Boromir and Théoden. He can quest for 2 willpower and then ready for combat if necessary.

For detail on scenarios I've played see the Fellowship description.

This deck is weak on location control, and questing can become an issue. Combat has been good, as you might expect from a Tactics heavy deck.

Strategy

For questing I quest with Merry and Théoden every round, and often with Boromir as well. If Théoden gets Snowmane and Herugrim he can quest and attack. Halfling Determination is mainly used for a cheap willpower boost.

I try to engage most enemies with this deck, as Beregond from the other deck can defend with sentinel, and Boromir with Legolas (other deck, using Ranged) and some allies can usually kill off most enemies in one attack.

Arod is for Legolas on the other deck, similarly for Rivendell Blade and Rivendell Bow. I've never needed to, but if I had spares of both they could be played on a Watcher of the Bruinen and he could become a useful attacker. Citadel Plate and Spear of the Citadel are for Beregond, with any extra Spears for Gondorian Spearman. The 2nd Citadel Plate can go on any hero that needs it. Support of the Eagles is mainly for Beregond to get excellent defence or Legolas to get more attack. I would probably play a third copy on Boromir, but have not needed to in any scenario yet. The Daggers of Westernesse are for any hero really, one can go with on Théoden if he gets Snowmane, and Boromir can use some. If Brand son of Bain from the other deck gets Unexpected Courage he can use them to boost his attack as well. The Blades of Gondolin are also there just for some extra progress, I have used them on Boromir and Legolas.

Farmer Maggot ends up questing, as does Gandalf. The other allies are all for combat. I mainly use Gandalf for threat reduction or card draw. I don't often need the direct damage for these decks.

Gondorian Discipline is for Beregond if there are any bad shadow effects.

Changes

I'm actually fairly happy with the balance of cards between the decks, it doesn't feel like one deck has too many expensive cards. I might change a few cards around if I get stuck on a quest. I really like the possibility of having Support of the Eagles and either Vassal of the Windlord or Winged Guardian in play from the first round, so I expect I'll want to keep it in this deck. I might want Hail of Stones in this deck rather than the other, but normally this deck only has more ready characters after I've got several allies in play.

I'm not sure about the Watchers of the Bruinen and the Blades of Gondolin, I might replace them with some other cards as I feel they are the least useful. I aim to try the Heirs of Numenor quests, and Ring Mail might be decent as a boost for Merry. Shadow of the Past might help questing if I return a low impact card to the top of the encounter deck.

I've got the first 2 cycles, HoN, EaAD, TMV and the first 4 Lotr Saga boxes, which explains why some cards like Gondorian Shield are missing :)

Any feedback is welcome!
