Beginner disclaimer: This deck should be mostly buildable with the Core Set, Defenders of Gondor, Riders of Rohan and Dwarves of Durin starter decks. A list of missing cards / replacements is suggested down below

I will never say it enough but Lothíriel is the best design of the last cycle. Contracts are amazing, yeah. But Lothíriel enables both Rohan and Gondor decks:

  • Rohan deck if Éomer is somewhere on the board(*), just because bouncing Éomund in an out is stupid, esepcially with the inclusion of the Horn of the Mark. Since the Rohan archetype of discarding allies has always suffered greatly because it's both resource- and card-intense, she helps a damn lot.
  • Gondor deck because she is the only reasonable Gondorian quester (hero wise) with her starting 3 . For example in our current line-up, before she was added to the card pool, your only choice of Gondor hero would be Caldara or Beregond, neither of them good questers (at best average). She also of course allows for the own Gondorian bouncing, mainly with the Soldier of Gondor that you can play repeatedly to draw all of your allies. She also combos in different ways with both version of Imrahil, which is so cool.
  • Now that I think about it, she also enables a Mutual Accord archetype I will have to revisit one day.

The deck is fairly versatile, I have beaten the full Against the Shadow Cycle with it (and it's got Siege and Battle questing).

Mulligan for Soldier of Gondor (you need them for card draw), Steward of Gondor and some more allies. An early Valiant Sacrifice is clutch. From there it should run swiftly.

The deck has a fair amount of questing power early on (enough let's say 5 since you want to be using Prince Imrahil and trigger his Response) and can be further boosted with Visionary Leadership of course.

Card draw is covered by Soldier of Gondor and Valiant Sacrifice early on, and supplemented by the Rod of the Steward. I don't see the Rod getting much play around. But mid-game, when your hand is kinda stuck with double uniques or whatever and you already have 10 resources on Boromir, why not draw 5 cards?

Boromir's ability should be enough for attacking . Hell, I even totally forgot about it during several games, and it was still fine, especially with the Valiant Sword.

is a little harder to come by. Fortunately, you can get some Shining Shield and feed a kid or three to Hill Trolls and the like that can be retrieved with Knight of Belfalas. You do have some (very powerful) healing with the Warden of Healings, so don't be afraid to take some damage.

Some combos to keep in mind:

Sideboard:

(*) Hint to the designers in case any future female card comes by: it's cool that Lothiriel gains an ability or trait through Eomer, but the reverse would make it more equal IMO.

Until I read your write-up I would've assumed you put Rod of the Steward on Lothíriel so her resources weren't useless when they pile up.

You can do that too, but the Rod's effect is going to be less spectacular (you would accumulate resources but not that many since a game lasts between 7 and 12 turns average and you're going to pay for a couple Knight of Belfalas out there). The Rod is a quite expensive trade-off, its true value being that it is unlimited.

I would rather channel Lothíriel's resources paying for Envoys of Pelargir and fueling either Boromir or Prince Imrahil. That is actually one overlooked huge advantage the Envoy of Pelargir gives you: cost-efficient resource-smoothing.

Good point. As a relative newcomer I'm still learning the value of certain abilities in the game, but I'm well aware how wonderful Envoy of Pelargir is to adjust resources between heroes. Another option from the Defenders of Gondor box would be to use 3x Errand-riders in place of the Squires. If not needed for chumps they can shuttle resources away from Lothiriel if need be.

You can go -1x Squire of the Citadel -1x Faramir (who I included just for fun but doesn't really serve any purpose honestly) and +2x Errand-rider.

The reason I chose Squire of the Citadel over Errand-rider is Siege questing since I was playing the Against the Shadow cycle. It's already a bit more cost efficient than the Errand, effectively costing 0. But in those Siege/Battle questing, he can quest for 1 / with Lothíriel's ability and nets you 1 resource. I've actually even used them in standard questing too if Visionary Leadership is out.

I might be stupid but how do you have lore characters without lore heroes to pay for them?

Jun 24, 2022 Marctimmins89 105

Lothiriel and A Very Good Take can put them into play.

@Darth Readius this is written in the description. A classic combo is to play thé Warden of Healing through Herald of Anórien's effect! Of course A Very Good Tale is also an option.

Ohh I see! Thanks guys! Sorry I am new to deck building. I only have the core set and Heirs of Numenor and I built a deck similar to this and after shadow cards killed my questor Eowyn I was like sure would be nice to have some healing haha

No problem. Well if you play Éowyn you can discard a Daughter of the Nimrodel by using Eowyn's ability then bring the daughter back with Stand and Fight, which is in sphere. Solved!
