Gondor calls for aid... and Rohan will answer! (Thematic Fel

Description

This is a thematic fellowship build around Gondor and Rohan and the delivery of the Red Arrow.

The original idea was to simply build an Ingold/Hirgon/Prince Imrahil deck that could draw 3 extra cards per turn by triggering Ingolds ability in different phases. I realized that this deck with 2 questing tactics heroes would greatly benefit from Tactics Théoden. Because he's hard to use in solo play, I thought why not build a fellowship around those heroes that works not in only mechanically but also thematically. I added Éowyn and Merry cause they are key players on the Rohan side of the story. While any version of these heroes might have worked, Tactics Eowyn represents her Dernhelm arc and gets buffed by Theoden and Spirit Merry gives us access to spirit for readying effect and some other thematic Rohan cards.

Questing is the main strength of this fellowship, you can quest for up 19 willpower on turn 1 with only your heroes, although you might want to hold back Prince Imrahil, Théoden or sometimes even Éowyn for a double kill with her ability. Once you get Visionary Leadership (that is easy to trigger cause you want keep a ressource on Imrahil anyway) and a couple of Gondor allies out you can reach even higher numbers. Mutual Accord can be used to boost the Rohan characters as well for a big push. You can use Ride Them Down to convert some excess wilpower into damage.

Another advantage of this high willpower is that you can complete sidequests easily. The Storm Comes is the most important one cause it helps the Rohan deck to get out their spirit allies. The other ones are great thematic fits and Rally the West boosts also the attack/defense of a Theoden with Golden Shield and Herugrim.

You don't start the game with a great defender so you have to rely early in the game on chump blockers you dig out with Imrahil or combat tricks like Feint and Elfhelm. With Gondorian Shield resp. Golden Shield both Imrahil and Theoden can become decent defenders that can be readied by Onward Into Battle/Snowmane or Unexpected Courage. You also has some good defensive allies with Defender of Rammas and Defender of Cair Andros that can be played cheaper with Hirgon.

Additional damage can be negated with Honour Guard or Gondorian Discipline. Warden of Healing can be cheated out with either Herald of Anórien or The Storm Comes.

Attack power comes mainly from your allies. You can use Eowyn and burn through your Riddermark Knights and Westfold Outriders early on and have Rider of Rohan ready on later in the game once you completed a sidequest. Dagger of Westernesse is here for thematic reasons and can activate Foe-hammer for some much needed card draw.

In the sideboard are some cards that would improve these decks, but we normally don't use them at our table anymore cause they make most quests to easy and are strong in so many decks that they decrease variety in deckbuilding. You can slot them in if you play some hard quests or just prefer a higher power level.

good use of Théoden. he is so thematic but not so good compare to his spirit-version

i am not sure what your cardpool is, but beside "global" considerations (that will follow after) i have some ideas that might improve nevertheless you include contracts:

the Horn of the Mark would imo improve it allways

then with rohan and Westfold Horse-breeder around i would incllude Hobbit Pony for Merry so u can wait if you want to use hic ability or let him quest, depending on situation.

Warden of Healing only playable with Herald of Anórien or Send for Aid i do not know if that is worth it. other healing could be done with Dúnedain Remedy

Thorongil is also a good card for theoden, merry or imrahil.

global considerations, the The Last Alliance might perhaps improve the gondordeck (traits could be warrior and scout, then the same heroes and little twaek in the allies and reamin gondorfokus)

@doomguard Thanks for the feedback! I have the full card pool, but tried to stay thematic. So no Dúnedain Remedy or Hobbit Pony (Merry is riding a horse at this point of the story.

The Last Alliance doesn't work with Hirgon cause no character in your deck can have both traits.

I considered Thorongil for Theoden, but it is a bit of a thematic stretch and seemed too slow. Paying three ressources for 1 cost reduction only gets value after 4 turns. Might still be worth it for Imrahil. But you already have a lot of readying effects. Maybe you the drop the second Onward Into Battle for it.

Horn of the Mark was a consideration, but I don't lean that heavily in the discard archetype. There are only 13 allies with discard effects, given that you see around half your decks and perhaps not even trigger all of them you can maybe draw 5 cards. But that's only if you get it out early enough. At that point I prefer the earlier burst from Ancient Mathom/Foe-hammer. I guess you could play it on Theoden to get value of the Gondor decks Warriors, but then you don't have the restricted slots for Golden Shield and Herugrim.

@contract, u did not read carefully, the traits are NOT gondor and rohan, they are warrior and scout (and that fits to your heroes), that is possible and could have only gondor or rohan allies who are either warriot or scout. i am not sure it is worth it, but you get discount but cannot include some allies like Envoy of Pelargir or Herald of Anórien or Warden of Healing but the alternatives scouts and warriors of rohan and gondor are not bad themselfes.
