I wanted to bring a crew of Hobbits through the Angmar Awakened cycle, but needed someone to keep them alive and handle combat -- cue Big Papa Bear Beorn. In such situations, Beorn tends not to last long, but with Good Meal and Smoke and Think, Fortune or Fate and The Houses of Healing are cheap. With the addition of good old Landroval, Beorn has more lives than your average cat, and will be protecting the squishies all the way through end game.
Cool synergies:
- Hero recursion cards work with Folco, too.
- Warden of Healing also helps reduce cost of The Houses of Healing.
- Sneak Attack is for Gandalf, but if you know Beorn is going to die this Combat Phase, then use it on Landroval for free bear bounce.
- Spare Pipe helps with Smoke and Think, but is also useful to fish out one of the many helpful events in this deck.
- Nori can help recur Smoke and Think and Drinking Song, all three work nicely together.
- Dúnedain Hunter is great with Beorn. Together, they can take down an enemy with up to 8 .
- Note that Legacy of Númenor and Errand-rider both work with Beorn, as his resource pool is not included in his immunity text (see FAQ p. 15 on Proud Hunters).
Ways to make the deck better:
- Deep Knowledge and Daeron's Runes. Both are better than Old Toby, but I kept that in for theme.
- Legacy of Númenor is helpful and works great if you get it first turn, but could be dropped for Steward of Gondor.
- Henamarth Riversong or Gléowine are probably more useful than Fast Hitch and Deeping Defender.
- Merry --> Frodo Baggins, find room for The Shirefolk (maybe drop Good Meal).
Ways to improve theme:
- Honour Guard and Nori --> Giant Bear, Beorning Skin-changer, Birna OR Bywater Shirriff plus another Beorn's Rage and Dúnedain Hunter.
- Warden of Healing --> Healing Herbs.
- Deeping Defender --> Gaffer Gamgee.
- Steward of Orthanc --> Ranger of Cardolan.
- Treebeard --> Thalion or Without My Hat.
- Nori --> Pippin (might also be better, period)

Jan 04, 2023like it. would perhaps add The Shirefolk because the dying of beorn is part of the game, there is a window to use it. would consider, replace Merry with Frodo Baggins another safetyoption specially if includin The Shirefolk |
Jan 04, 2023Yes, I think at least including Frodo Baggins in the sideboard would be useful for some quests, especially if you don't anticipate threat being the main issue. Not sure what I'd drop for The Shirefolk, probably Good Meal, I think. |
Jan 05, 2023consider Thorongil it either gives Merry +3 attack and tacticsphere or (even better) Frodo Baggins get Frodo Baggins ability (and ld-sphere) for 1 #thorongil and 2 The Shirefolk i would discard the 2 Steward of Orthanc and 1 Treebeard would keep the Good Meal for Smoke and Think or The Houses of Healing (depends what is in hand) if you need more willpower as replacement for the Steward of Orthanc i would replace a Honour Guard and/or 1 #nori with Grimbold and/or Pippin |
