Idea / Concept
Galadriel is definitely my favourite hero in the entire game, and I've built numerous decks around her.
In multiplayer-rounds, I like to take the role of a support-deck (questing, healing, cancelling, location-control etc.), while in solo my preferred playstyle is "turtling", i.e. to stay under the radar while doing side-quests, slowly building up a board-state, and eventually win from a well-protected position.
Some things that I've noticed, though:
-
A specific Galadriel-build might struggle against particular quests. For example, it's not possible to escape "Foundations of Stone" if Galadriel (in a Grey Wanderer shell) is your only hero.
-
The turtling way is not always the best choice. In scenarios like "Flight of the Stormcaller", speed is essential.
-
Still, it's kind of a waste to have numerous Galadriel-decks sleeved up (possibly with proxies) as there is an overlap between them.
So I came up with a modular approach, i.e. a set of about 100 cards that fit neatly in two deck-boxes to bring along to events etc. The groups of cards are marked with little paper punch-outs in different colors. These modules can be combined easily and quickly, thus providing a flexible variation of multiple possible Galadriel-decks simultaneously, which can be adapted to the scenario and/or setting.
Example:
The uploaded main decklist presented here, in this way, is just one example-combination, as in Grey Wanderer / Secrecy + ALeP / One Ring + Side Quests.
With this setup, I beat Journey Along the Anduin in nightmare-mode (solo, twice in a row, 1st two attempts), just for reference.
- If another player needs The One Ring or ALeP cards are not welcome at the table, switch the package against something else.
- If speed is important, remove the Side Quests module and add some substitutes.
- If brute force is required, bring in the Outlands.
- If ...
You get my point.
The Modules
-
Skeleton-Deck (21)
1x Galadriel
1x Firyal
1x Jubayr
1x Nenya
These are "auto-includes" and nearly always remain, unless, for example, another player really needs one of those allies (as MotK, for example). They represent the primary role(s) mentioned above.
-
Grey Wanderer / Secrecy Package (10)
3x Resourceful
3x Timely Aid
The Grey Wanderer synergizes with Galadriel perfectly. Mostly, you use it for resources and readying. In combination with Galadriel's innate ability, you effectively gain 2 resources and an extra-card each round, while your threat increases more slowly than with other heroes, so you stay in secrecy much longer. Also, you get Nenya for free from the start. Awesome.
Note that Timely Aid should be the first card you play in the planning phase. As for more secrecy-cards, Celduin Traveler is another option, of course. But I usually prefer to avoid enemies and keep locations coming.
-
Outland Swarm (16)
1x Forlong
The usual. Sometimes raw power is necessary. Note that Galadriel's (often overlooked) passive ability allows them to quest and fight the turn they enter play.
In some variations, you might include merely the Ethir Swordsman, possibly + Anfalas Herdsman if you only need the boost.
-
ALeP / The One Ring Shenenigans (15)
1x Magic Ring
1x The One Ring
This is where the fun really begins. With this module, you'll increase Galadriel's hit points, thus allowing her to take undefended attacks, then heal up next round. The ALeP cards are excellent additions here as they protect her from unforeseen shadow-effects and help to kill enemies.
-
3-Hero Setup (11)
3x Elven-light
2x Nenya
This module is mainly for solo-play. Here, you probably want to promote Firyal to Messenger of the King. Awesome again. In some of those ugly Gondor scenarios, you might choose a -ally instead.
The extra copies of Nenya are necessary because you need to find it the traditional way without The Grey Wanderer.
In multiplayer-games, you can, of course, pick those Unexpected Courage, too, if you wish to support Beregond or other heroes on the table.
-
Side-Questing Fun (7)
1x Double Back
1x Scout Ahead
1x Thalion
Nothing spectacular here. Just some of the most useful side-quests + some allies with synergies.
-
Filler Cards (9)
2x Dwarven Tomb
1x Elfhelm
1x Glorfindel
1x Quickbeam
If you don't know what else to include to get to 50 cards.
-
"Real" Sideboard (17)
1x Éowyn
2x Thrór's Key
2x Thrór's Map
Again, nothing spectacular. Tale of Tinúviel is a pet card of mine that makes Northern Tracker a powerhouse, but can also be used with a Dunedain partner-deck.
